"The leftists I know are all engaged and committed to fighting back. They’re not cowering doomsday preppers. They are working hard and showing more ambition than anyone else in politics. It’s the liberals and centrists who are the pessimistic, unimaginative ones who think we must take baby steps and that nothing good is possible. In fact, I think the excess negativity on the left here is Guastella’s. He is telling us we’re all a bunch of failures unworthy of the great Karl Marx. (“Are there any intellectuals of the Left today whose insights and commitment to humanity’s long-term horizon rival those of Karl Marx or Karl Polanyi?”)

But look, I believe in solidarity. I don’t want a rift with Guastella and Jacobin here, because I have immense respect for Jacobin and warm, comradely feelings toward them. I don’t feel Guastella is being fair to me or to Melonio, Taylor, Klein, or Steffen, but the important point is that we all agree, actually. He writes that “without a flag staked in the future — a clear vision of the world we want for our children and theirs — we lose track of where we want to go.” Well you don’t have to tell me, Dustin. I write things like that all the time. So let’s not bicker, eh? There’s no need to write articles in Jacobin castigating fellow leftists as “unserious, misanthropic, and bound to lose.” Just join with us as we build the glorious socialist future together. Solidarity forever!"

"Locked in their rooms, with their rudimentary computers, they set about creating a non-earthly utopia. They dreamed about other worlds and other intelligences, fusing anarchism with New Ageism and libertarianism with science fiction.

So began the tragi-comic rebirth of utopianism. Since then, the ideology has evolved with the growth of AI and cybernetics. It is now mainstream right across the tech world, with adherents including tech guru Ray Kurzweil, and billionaires Elon Musk, Sam Altman, Peter Thiel, and Marc Andreessen. Today’s pioneers of repeating-the-past predict a future of unbounded technological and economic growth.

The “Tech Utopians” have two main projects. The first is abundance: an end to poverty, hunger, sickness, and back-breaking labour. This will supposedly be achieved through vast social engineering projects, masterminded by an elite class, and with the aid of genius machines.

The second is the improvement of humans through scientific progress. A perfect “blank slate” human will be created for utopia 2.0, and they will be morally, intellectually, and physically enhanced. Humans won’t just be cured of illness. They’ll be cured of mortality itself.

These ideas, however, are hardly new. They appeared in nascent form as far back as Plato. Then, during the Enlightenment, they grew stronger, with the promise of a blank-slate society built upon rationalism and science, in which a better type of human would emerge. Today’s Tech Utopians, though mostly claiming to be libertarians, are attempting the same projects — only this time they plan to use AI and biotech to achieve their goals. Elon Musk, for one, envisages a “future of abundance” once AI reaches human-level intelligence (so-called AGI)."

Europe's 20th-century ideological led to immense human suffering.

Earlier, religious wars driven by visions of a God Utopia caused tragedy.

Now progress tempts us toward "God Utopia 2.0" -ceaselessly striving to create a better species or even summon a machine god.

I love how, in the Year of Our Lord 2025, people still argue that Capitalist Realism is superior to fantastical

My brother in Christ, the Free Market is a thought expiriment. We teach it in 101 as a starting point to analyzing more complex systems, but a truly has not, and will not ever exist in reality

loves to bash for “

When a is literally a utopia that’s built form like 11 insane assumptions; non of which are ever true in practice, much less all 11 at once

Meanwhile leftist assumptions are shit like “workers are more productive when they have ownership over their work” or “humans will naturally cooperate to gather and distribute resources”
While waving at millions of years of the evolution of humans as social creatures

I have often been told that I was cynical for believing that laws are made by the ruling class to control the rest of us for their benefit. I've often been told that I'm utopian for believing that we'd be better off without laws and the people that use them to control us. Apparently the non-cynical POV is that laws are made democratically by society for our collective benefit. Apparently the non-utopian POV is that people need to be controlled otherwise we'll harm one another.

But how cynical to believe that people are just naturally so dangerous that the constant threat of police violence is necessary to stop us from hurting each other. How utopian to believe that the violence of law enforcement can be restrained and directed by mere laws, that pieces of paper can protect us from bullets and clubs. I'm not cynical, I'm not utopian, I'm an anarchist!

Two figures stand close together in semi-darkness lit by a single light source above them to the right. The figure on the left is at a 45 degree angle to us and holds a sword upright in their right hand, the figure on the right is facing us directly and holds a small heart-shaped mirror in their left hand, directly pointed at us.

Both figures are draped in gauze-like material, wearing headdresses in the forms of sun crown halos, with golden rays forming semi-circles above their heads. Beneath the gauze the top half of their faces/heads are covered with jewel-encrusted masks, and their lower faces seem golden. They have jewels, necklaces, and embroidered ribbons of cloth draped around their necks and covering their chests.A figure’s head and shoulders are shown against an indistinct background. The figure’s head and top half of their face is covered with a mask/headdress made of faded pink, purple, white, and lavender roses. Some of the petals are covered with traces of cobwebs.

The figure’s lips are painted red, and their skin is alabaster. They have further strings of flowers around their neck, hanging down over their chest, similarly covered in cobwebs.A drawing of a male-presenting figure clad in a robe standing on a path in a graveyard.A drawing of five people walking in line. Great activist #ChicoMendes once said that “Environmentalism without #classstruggle is just #gardening.” I think in a similar vein we can say that environmentalism without #justice and #humanrights is #utopianism at its best and #fascism at its worst. (4)

Lucid, clear explanation (as is usual from @xriskology) of the grave risk posed by utopians with power & money:

1. visions are inherently self-rationalizing. Their revolutions can never fail, they can only *be* failed.

2. is more or less always exclusionary. "If the Christian heaven were to include atheists, for instance, it wouldn't be heaven."

The problem is that utopia has a menacing underbelly. First, its pursuit can cause profound harms to those who happen to be standing in the way. This is why utopian fantasies have fueled some of the worst atrocities in history: If the means are justified by the ends, and the ends are quite literally a utopian world of infinite or astronomical amounts of value, then what exactly is off the table when it comes to realizing those ends? Second, the realization of utopia could also have catastrophic consequences, as most utopian visions are inherently exclusionary. There is always someone who is purposely left out in any imagined utopia — some undesirable group whose presence in paradise would disqualify it from counting as such. If the Christian heaven were to include atheists, for instance, it wouldn't be heaven. Hence, one should always ask who a particular utopian vision is for. Everyone, or just a select few? If so, which people are allowed in and which are banished to perdition, if not sentenced to be anninilated?

The dystopian narrative around AI is another example of capitalism painting a grim future which is “inevitable”, preventing us from envisioning anything else. we need more positive utopian outlooks, otherwise we will never stop the death march of capitalism.

Interesting discussion between Liza Featherstone and Kristen R. Ghodsee about dystopian Sci-Fi and American education:

From Alduous Huxley’s Brave New World to George Orwell’s 1984 to Lois Lowry’s The Giver, dystopian stories dominate school reading lists. ... As Ghodsee argues ... “The message of these books is loud and clear: you may be unhappy with the way things are but forget about trying to change them.”
