It seams #Microsoft doesn't allow anymore to associate the legacy #notepad c:\Windows\system32\notepad.exe with the .csv file type. Not even after I removed the #AI bloated #UWP version of Notepad from the system.

This is fine.

💩 Meta just killed native WhatsApp on Windows 11, now it opens WebView, uses 1GB RAM all the time

「 My understanding is that the recent layoffs at Mark Zuckerberg-headed Meta likely disbanded the entire team behind the native WhatsApp. I don’t see any other reason why Meta would abandon its native app for Windows. Meta will save costs by maintaining the web app codebase on Windows, but you’re going to hate the experience 」

Anyone here with #WinRT knowledge?
If I have e.g. com:ComInterface and com4:ComInterface registered, does com4 on supported systems override the com declaration?

this new #WhatsApp for #Windows crashes permanently for me. I don't know the reason, but given its inconvenience... I wouldn't say it's an absolute disaster (I can use it still), but comparing to the #UWP app it's a nightmare.

So You Want To Build a Windows GUI in ~~2022~~ 2025

i think i will stick with WinForms for another decade or two then

**TL;DR:** Overview of four Microsoft UI frameworks—WinForms, WPF, UWP, and WinUI 3—rated on practicality, support, and future prospects, mostly negatively.

**Extracted Text:**

**WinForms**
Kinda sucks but is surprisingly practical. It's a very thin layer over old-school Windows APIs, which is both a blessing (simplicity) and a curse (mediocre layout+styling options). Well-supported by the .NET team.

**WPF**
Pretty good but complex and nearly abandoned. Hasn't received new features in a decade. Ownership has changed to the Windows team and they're doing the absolute bare minimum to support it.

**UWP**
Was the future of Windows UI, now in maintenance mode.
**Good**: easy to make attractive UIs that work well for both mouse+touch.
**Bad**: incredibly painful sandboxing and packaging requirements.
**Verdict**: avoid.

**WinUI 3**
A small team is trying to salvage what they can from UWP's UI stack. Slow, buggy, and weighed down by a *lot* of historical baggage. Check back in a year but I'm pessimistic.

**Image Description:**
Dark blue background with white text summarizing the current state of four Windows UI frameworks. Tone is informal and slightly humorous, critiquing each framework's practicality, support, and future viability.

Okayokay #Microsoft, how can you fuck up #Windows so badly?

User complains "Task Manager autostart settings have no effect on your application"

User checks HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System
And both keys, SupportFullTrustStartupTasks and EnableFullTrustStartupTasks, are missing.
Recreates it, and autostart works again.

In fact, everything except "HideFastUserSwitching" and "DisableAutomaticRestartSignOn" were missing.

HOW!?

@helge The introduction of apps in Win8 added a whole new look and feel to windows, but it was also basically impossible for developers of existing apps to trivially adopt the new UWP XAML.
So instead of trying to target UWP, devs ended up targeting web. Now Windows is trying to fix that with , but the damage was done. People aren't building native Windows apps anymore.
The goals of UWP were righteous - one app for desktop, phone and xbox. But the cons didnt outweigh the pros

Do you want to use your controller with your and apps?

No problem: Just install this simple mapping into your registry:

@jscholes I'd prefer 141 checkboxes over an interface where you can't Shift+Tab back to the place where you started tabbing from (hello #UWP applications).

@lettuce point is #Apple - unlike #Microsoft with #WinRT & #UWP - knows how to attract #developers and maintain a "#premium #platform" with excellent, free toolchains [#Xcode!] to get running.

  • Whereas with #Windows and espechally #WindowsMobile, development was seen as an essential chore and #3rdParty #Apps got sales because Microsoft refused to make their own okay options.

@BernieDoesIt @Catvalente there is:

  • REFUSE TO RELEASE ON #iOS UNTIL THE TERMS ARE CHANGED!

As with every #Platform, #Software makes #OperatingSystems and the #OperatingSystem makes #Hardware.

  • This worked with #WindowsPhone and #UWP: everyone refused to build #Apps for it and thus it died pretty quickly.

And if you want to say that's not an option, take a look at #AltStore which automates all the necessary work to perpetually #sideload any #App on iOS in a noob-friendly way.

Remember: "Everyone else does it" never was and never will be a valid excuse for any shit system!

  • Also you could just refuse to offer the sales on Apple's platform and add any "#Premium Features" post-launch with your own payment & licensing infrastructure. If you're big enough or small enough you may get away with it. #NotLegalAdvice

Otherwise band together with other #developers and coordinate.

And if you allow Apple to exploit you harder than #Valve, then you normalize that shit!
