So...
I got (read - paid for) #ProWritingAid not long ago to help improve my #writing.
The last update wouldn't work.
After a few emails exchanged with their Help center, I was informed that from the last update, #Win8.1 is not supported anymore.
This information was not available anywhere on their site when I purchased the program. It wasn't there when I downloaded the latest update either.
The information is not on the site at all, not even now. I searched for it.
There is no mention of supported OS versions when trying to purchase the app.
Don't get me wrong - I love the program, it's quite helpful.
But this is bad. This is not how you manage/update/sell a program to customers.
Every self-respecting vendor informs customers well in advance when they stop supporting a specific OS version. And that information is clearly mentioned on their site.
I am disappointed.
Never mind that I paid for a year, and more than half of it I will not get any updates.

1/3 On the death of #win8:

It was IMO too drastic a departure from the previous Windows-es. If MS kept with the Metro design, I think people would've thought higher of 8 later on. A case of "someone moved my cheese".

The fact that you had 2 control panels/centres, was laughable in inconsistency. And everything had to be full screen for some odd reason. Why?

It took them 2 service packs to properly display the shutdown dialog buttons.

They could not even get MS flagship products (Office) to use Metro. Which means, office workers were in this weird limbo of Win32-style apps with WPF/Metro apps. You are either in Metro land with its full screen tiled start menu, or you're in the "legacy" mode with a task bar.

At least in task bar land you can run more than 2 apps at once.

MS later backed down on Metro design and watered it down for Win 10.

Я тут один старенький комп реанимирую. Вместо 2гб DDR2 пришли 2 планки по 2гб. Теперь сижу и страдаю, какую систему накатить на нее? Win7 vs Win8; x32 vs x64 ? С одной стороны, Win7 вроде как системники ниже, но скорость работы Win8 куда выше. Практически то же самое и с разрядностью. Линух ставить не вариант вообще — комп будет пользоваться детьми и матерью, которые компы видели в телевизоре. Да и софта обучающего кучу надо ставить, так что с бубном вокруг вайна плясать интереса никакого.

Если найду файл с отчетом по железу, выложу ссылку в комментах.
