I don’t like to mention that rich guy over at , but he’s rambling on about & agriculture, which is in my wheelhouse. And he is also unabashedly & absurdly wrong.

Misinformation on climate change is irresponsible & dangerous, so let’s be clear:

25% to 30% of global emissions come from our system.

As UT Austin’s Michael Webber describes, agriculture is a major cause, victim and - importantly - meaningful solution to change.

It is misinformation so I will not retype it here.

Just finished watching Ed Winters video on horse racing, and he bought up an interesting point about the purpose of animals is to live their own lives. Which honestly gave me goosebumps because of how, chilling that is... dear god, how low has humanity gone? The fact we're controlling how other's live harmless lives? And it's so universal too.
Fuck...

i can’t comprehend why some people still *choose* to drink cow milk over plant milk. plant milk is delicious! why would anyone consciously choose the option that takes an innocent, helpless, terrified mother, forcefully impregnates them endlessly, separates them from their babies the moment they’re born, and mechanically tortures them in a prison until they are no longer “useful” and must be brutally killed? not to mention the massive toll on the #environment and the fact that it’s just plain gross: you’re a human drinking a glass of processed pus from the breasts of a tormented animal. i’ve spent time caring for these beautiful beings after they’ve been liberated. they’re no different from the #dogs and #cats that we love so much. they love to play and frolic, they feel emotion deeply, and they have their own personalities if given the chance to develop them. but in each of their eyes, i can see the pain and horror that we’ve subject them to, and for what? the ONLY justification for this is not knowing better. please, for these sweet, innocent creatures, for our children’s future during the #climatecrisis, for #leftism, for #feminism, go #vegan ❤️

“Last month, millions of intensively farmed chickens died during the record-breaking heatwave. As temperatures reached 45C, the birds were left flapping and panting as they died slowly of heat exhaustion, according to a witness.

One shed worker told The Independent that the birds were simply “left to die in the heat” and “written off” as a cost. Another worker said they were experiencing flashbacks from the “sheer scale and stink of the dead bodies” of the chickens that died. “I often find that I just suddenly start crying and shaking,” they said.”

I just finished watching the incredible video, The Messenger (Imagine a world without birdsong), a documentary that deals with the avian extinction crisis. The video focuses on songbirds and highlights the incredible feats of migration they undertake, their variety and songs. The video also discusses their importance to our ecosystems. But, the main focus is on the existential threats they face in the Anthropocene, from the millions that perish against skyscraper windows or in domestic cats' claws, to the insidious impact of neonicotinoid pesticides and the ecological devastation wreaked by the energy sector, and the looming threat of climate change to migratory birds. The movie poses some potential palliatives, for example agroecology. But the message is stark. If we continue along the present course, birds face a dubious future.

This means that over 30 people will lose their jobs, as a result of Starbucks' illegal anti-union efforts.
Ithaca was the first city that had 100% of its Starbucks stores unionized & now it will the first city to have all of its Starbucks stores shuttered.

The story hasn't broken locally yet (SB did a news dump last night); message me if you want to cover this

@sandramarie outdoor cats take a huge toll on wild bird populations (estimated at almost 2.4 billion birds a year in north america). please consider bringing your cat indoors. wild birds are already being decimated by the climate crisis, habitat loss, and the avian flu.

ADDITIONAL DRIVERS
OF BIRD DECLINES Habitat loss is by far the greatest cause of bird population declines. Humans also kill billions of birds in the U.S. annually through more direct actions, such as allowing outdoor cats to prey upon birds. Canadian bird mortality estimates show remarkably similar patterns. Data-driven assessments of how different human-caused sources of bird mortality contribute to population declines are essential for developing strategic conservation objectives and science-based
policies. Reducing or eliminating direct sources of mortality could save millions, if not
billions, of birds annually. The best ways to reduce bird mortality include: • CATS: Keeping pet cats indoors and implementing policies to eliminate
feral cat colonies. • COLLISIONS: Following bird-friendly window practices, reducing night lighting in and on tall buildings, warning auto drivers in high- collision areas, installing flashing rather than steady-burning lights on communication towers, and locating wind turbines away from areas of high bird concentrations (especially areas that pose threats to particu
lar species such as eagles). • CHEMICALS: Limiting the broadcast spraying of pesticides and insec- ticides and introducing integrated pest management practices (which
reduce or eliminate chemical applications) in agricultural areas.
