Are there any #parentalControls on the #fediverse like #mastodon or #matrix ? I am considering using matrix for text messaging, but this is one of the things I couldn't find any information about #fedihelp

There are so many iconic features in Pixelfed that not many people are aware of.
- Parental Controls (manage child accounts)
- Portfolios (curate a mini website of specific posts)
- Collections (Create groups of photos)
- Stories (ephemeral photos/videos that expire after 24h)

I suspect that #parentalcontrols are intentionally designed to make it harder for #parents to take any actions that aren't in the tech company's business interests.
I can’t tell if it’s #BadBadUX because it’s deprioritized internally, “tacked on” at the end, or if it’s deliberate #DarkPatterns to confuse and exasperate parents into complying with their monetization goals.
My experience in #PlayStation, #Roblox, #YouTube, #GooglePlay is so bad, it couldn’t be by accident.
@tedcurran thank you to all the people who have liked and boosted this post. Glad to see it's interesting to more than just me! I asked the same question on Reddit and it turned into a pretty interesting conversation thread that might be interesting to you if you want to know more about this subject.

@grogpod these look great- I'll check into them. Thanks so much!
I have recently fallen in love with the #roguelike and #roguelite genres of #videogames.
I’m especially interested in their powerful effects on #motivation, inspiring players to try-fail-try again-succeed, which is the holy grail for #instructionaldesign and #teaching more broadly.
I’d love to hear from #gamedevs and other #learningdesign pros who have explored integrating #rogueish mechanics in #learning, #seriousgames, and/or know of any #psychology #research connecting the two. Thanks!
Self-hosting sounds really cool, until you realize the security risks - it's not just about setting things up, it's a long-term commitment to running and securing your server.
Are you willing to get up on a work day at 3am because your server has been hacked (that's assuming you even notice)?
That's why I really appreciate the service the maintainers of Mastodon instances are providing to us - a big thank you!

LLMs give you better results when you can clearly tell them what you want them to do. This is sophisticated use of language in itself, a skill worth developing for those who want to use AI well in their work.

Just FYI there are a lot of people rooting for the end of the human race, including many silicon valley ai tech bros.
Returning to Really Simple Syndication brought peace to my day #rss #humanetech

I just had a proud moment playing #Returnal, clearing the challenge room in biome 5 with almost no damage after a week of getting brutally beat up on this level.
#Returnal is, simply put, a damn masterpiece. And it's not for its great gfx powered by #UE4, nor for the superb soundtrack. No, it's cos of the various gameplay mechanics you make acquaintance with little by little, as you die and live again, from the beginning. All of them force you to make decisions that will deeply affect your fate. Somehow this punishing, fast paced #thirdperson #bullethell #metroidvania #roguelike mongrel manages to keep you glued to the screen till the very end. #gaming
@ross I recall looking for alternatives to Facebook and Twitter back in the mid 2010s (for whatever f*ckery they were up to then) and I set up a #p2 site so I could post there and then syndicate out to the other sites, #posse style, deciding on a post-by-post basis which networks to share out to. It worked pretty well but only really worked one-way - you could post out but couldn't see your mentions/link backs/comments on those other platforms.
Whatever happened to #WordPressP2? I recall it in the early 2010s as a way to turn a #WordPress site into a #selfhosted #Twitter alternative. Then they started marketing it as a #Slack alternative, emphasizing the way they use it internally to guide #remotework called [happy tools](https://happy.tools/). Seems like it hasn't caught fire as either of these. Why not an #openweb alt to #Mastodon and other #Fediverse #microblogging tools via the #activitypub plug-in?

@tedcurran I have always used Facebook to talk to my IRL connections vs. Twitter to talk with the wider public and interesting strangers. Great to know that #Mastodon lets you consciously limit posts to your "followers-only", so as long as you curate who you let follow you, you have reasonable control over your #privacy. "Unlisted" and "mentioned-only" give you even more fine grain control.
Anyone trying to #deletefacebook could recreate that cozy campfire feeling with just friends. 🔥
