I have a Tascam 424mkIII multitrack cassette recorder going out for sale to my e-mail list at 6 PM Central! (If you're in the market for a 4-track and you're not already on the list, I encourage you to join at recdel.com/list .)

Getting familiar with the AC Infinity heater I got for our 3D printing enclosure. We were having some issues printing with Siraya Tech Blu v2 resin that some higher temps will hopefully solve. More 4-track parts on the way!

Ran into a friend who operates a Free Blockbuster in our neighborhood, and he gave me this tape that some anonymous ‘90s home recordist had left in there. Now I’m wondering if there is a dusty, forgotten Tascam 688 hiding within walking distance…

A tutorial cassette entitled “Tascam: Unlocking The Midistudios” rests on some brick steps. The liner notes to the Tascam: Unlocking The Midistudios cassette.

Hi! I'm Jack, the owner/operator of Recursive Delete Audio/Visual. I repair & refurbish vintage multitrack cassette recorders. If you have an old machine that needs some attention, reach out via the contact link. I'm always glad to answer questions related to 4-track recording!

Jack Saturn stands smiling in the center of the frame, wearing a blue Landscape t-shirt while holding a Yamaha MT100 multitrack cassette recorder. There are trees and a school building behind him.
Playing around with my Portrastudio 424mk3. Yes, we have too many projects going on at once but we grabbed up one of these as an experiment with going DAW-less. There's no real goals here other than to try it and exercise the fundamentals as it were and work within some intentional limitations.

With only 4 tracks, songs we make on this thing aren't likely to be in stereo, and we want to avoid bouncing tracks as much as possible. So that means pretty much just 4 things. Among the ideas were Vocals or Bass, Guitar or Bass, Piano or Sax, and OB6 or Modular (and maybe a drum machine).

I used an OB6 and Piano here. Actually, it was an Ableton Piano instrument but when we do this for real, I'll be playing my real piano now that I have a decent way to record it. You'll be hearing piano in some of the upcoming songs we'll be releasing (including a new synthwave one we're pretty excited about). And sax too, of course!

Anyways, tape is awesome!

Today's new old Alpha Alpha song: Finding It Hard. Written by Hans Dekker, recorded in 1996 and remixed using both digitally-separated stems and the original #4track recording in 2024. I remember this being fun to play but can't remember the chords anymore.

Freshly undug from the #Naphthalene, I now present a new #cassette-only release of my #analog #4track #tape recordings from 1989-1997 (20 songs). Who would dare listening to those!

Finally, we're getting to rock out again with one of my favorite new old The Hooded Crow tracks of all time, released to the world just today, "Ravine", written by Michel Bouma and initially featured on our second demo in 1994. Sometimes, a guy just wants a big dumb riffy rocker, and "Ravine" delivers that, but it also has enough movement in it to keep things interesting beyond that. And it's a joy to play!

New old The Hooded Crow demo, this time a two-person track from Michel Bouma and Johan Dijkhuis (YouTube, 2m 30s, thumbnails appear to be AI art - presumably Johan heard about me griping about the old art used in the other thumbnails):

I bought a #Korg KR mini #DrumMachine. It's limited but fun, and you know what makes it even more fun? Clipping it on the input of a #4Track, and then recording to #cassette! So much grit!

I'm recording a sample pack, with some additional effects from the Korg #Kaosspad 2S mini before it goes to a #Tascam #Porta02.

The #4track experiment from the other night involved creating loops of the same tempo but different number of beats on each track, creating polyrhythms as the tracks sync and de-sync. Then live mixing them fading in and out to record the final piece. Next stop: polytemporality. #Tascam #ExperimentalMusic
