The latest build of 86Box emulator is capable of reproducing the actual sound of a floppy disk drive. While this is a function still in beta, it adds a completely new dimension of depth to the retro experience. I like it!

Here's a quick video sample... booting MS-DOS 6.22 and installing STUNTS from 3.5inch floppy disks.

If you want Chicago (windows 95 beta) to work in 86box use the 86box CD-Rom 1.00 instead of 86box CD-Rom 3.50

Looks like the Mac mini M4 could turn out to be a quite capable retro machine for 86Box emulation. I just made a few tweaks to my Windows 95 VM settings and it could easily emulate a 350MHz Pentium II with the performance meter basically stuck at 100%. Which is already more than what my good, old Ryzen 5 5600X could do on Windows 11.

This definitely calls for more research!

Verdict: Stick with DOSBox if you wanna do games.

With 86Box, this i5-7200 laptop struggles hard to emulate an old 66Mhz Pentium II CPU at 100% speed. (Granted, this may be because I'm trying to plop a virtual Voodoo3 into it, too).

It is fun to play with virtual hardware that I wished I had 25 years ago, though...

Thanks to a new upload by "lemonhead" and "Digitoxin", I could finally complete my personal floppy disk collection of the 1987 game "Larry Leisure Suit" for the IBM-PC, Version 1.0.

This game was copy protected, so it's always neat to have all kinds of disk image formats available. I just dumped and added my own TeleDisk image. It works!

I love how most old retro PC games, although originally made only for DOS, almost consistently support Windows 95, as long as you can find a CD-ROM version produced after 1995. That's pretty neat!

Here's "Extreme Assault" ... one of my favourite 3D action games for MS-DOS ... and Windows 95 apparently!

I'm still working through the essential apps for Windows 95. It's a slow process. I started off adding Microsoft PowerToys, TweakUI, Office 95, Works 4.0, Paint Shop Pro, WinZip 6.3.... and now finally Office 97!

Just a quick emulation test of Descent II for Windows 95.

The game's CD-ROM includes both the DOS version, as well as a version for DirectX and WIndows. So, it's essentially the same game. The resolution here is a whole lot better than under DOS and the frame rates are also much improved. I'm loving it!

@lmemsm well, I'm open for contributions re: @OS1337 as well as packages for it and if you have some reproduceable build scripts that basically pull the latest release version and statically link all dependencies so one has to only plonk down a single binary (or a folder with it and a symlink into it) then I'll gladly accept said contributions.

• Bonus points if we can ditch #GCC for #LLVM but that's just a nice-to-have, not a hard requirement. Just open up an issue for a specific package, create some build script, and make a Pull Request.

Target platform as of now is #i486SX first, as that is the easiest to test with #QEMU / #VirtualBox / #86Box / and even bare metal, followed by the #Pi0 / #Pi0W...

• So yeah, your contribution is appreciated. I merely track builds in the wishlist so there ain't multiple people trying to build the same package...
