@chesheer Honestly, that's poor #OSS / #USS support from applications. hw.snd.default_unit just configures what the "virtual" /dev/dsp is an alias for. But of course #FreeBSD has /dev/dspX available to open whatever audio device you want, applications just would need to support that.
With the whole mess around #alsa, #pulseaudio, #pipewire (to name just a few "standards" #Linux came up with) around, it's no surprise #OSS / #USS is a second class citizen (if supported at all) in applications 😞

Hi all,
I've recently acquired a Panasonic Toughpad FZ-G1 Mk1 second hand and have it running Debian 12 quite well, except for one little nit.
Headphone and Speaker controls are swapped. So to hear any sound, I need to open up a mixer like `alsamixer` (specifically I need to run `alsamixer -c 0` to bypass Pipewire/PulseAudio) then turn up the "Headphone" channel to hear sound out of the internal speaker.
The "Speaker" channel controls the combo headset port.
I need the "Headphone" to adjust the combo headset port, and the "Speaker" to adjust the internal speaker … the way they are in fact labelled.

I've tried setting up `/etc/modprobe.d/snd-hda-intel.conf` to try an alternate `model` (I tried `aspire-headset-mic` based on other Panasonic machines needing this) but based on this list at https://docs.kernel.org/sound/hd-audio/models.html it is not at all clear which of these (if any) "switches" these two mixer channels.
If anyone could advise what `snd-hda-intel` module settings I should use, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Qtractor is natively hardwired and exclusive to the JACK Audio Connection Kit infrastructure, and the ALSA sequencer for MIDI. It is a Linux-only application.
Qtractor 1.5 4 was recently released on April 04, 2025.
Qtractor is an Audio/MIDI multi-track sequencer application written in C++ with the Qt framework. Target platform is Linux, where the Jack Audio Connection Kit (JACK) for audio, and the Advanced Linux Sound Architecture (ALSA) for MIDI, are the main infrastructures to evolve as a fairly-featured Linux desktop audio workstation GUI, specially dedicated to the personal home-studio.
In order to run Ardour on Linux you do NOT need the following things:
- JACK
- PipeWire
- PulseAudio
Use Linux' native drivers called ALSA and off you go.
P.S. You can't watch YouTube anymore when using ALSA with Ardour. Never watched YouTube on my guitar so personally I don't mind.
I've got audio working on MuseScore4 + Void Linux! A little summary of what I did (for myself and anyone else on #linux needing #MuseScore 4)
I first switched to #pipewire. For me, this involved uninstalling #pulseaudio and jack, then installing the packages `pipewire alsa-pipewire`. This differs on other distros. I needed to verify that pipewire was starting up properly. Since I didn't have a login manager, I had to set the XDG_RUNTIME_DIR variable manually and also create that directory everytime I booted. Using `tmp` instead of `run` worked better for me.
Then I followed these steps: https://docs.voidlinux.org/config/media/pipewire.html#alsa-integration to get #alsa integration going. Restart, then that's it!

No sé si desde ayer o antier, pero estuve teniendo fallas al reproducir vídeos de YouTube en mi computadora. Al principio creí que era por tener uBlock Origin, pero luego me di cuenta que eran todos los vídeos, tanto por internet como incluso los que ya tenía en mi computadora. Y trasteando un poco más, me di cuenta que el problema no eran los vídeos, sino el sonido como tal.
Resulta que desde siempre uso #Linux, pero parece que apenas estos días, los servidores de sonido como #PulseAudio o #ALSA ya no funcionan como tal, y deben ser reemplazados con PipeWire.
Igual y podría haber una solución menos drástica, pero como a mí me funcionó, les paso el dato.
All configuration that exists for #ALSA on #NixOS is the option to allow enabling persistence for the card's settings and nothing else. I guess because the assumption is that users will probably be configuring pulseaudio/pipewire instead?
