Why is it that the ones not having sex are the ones constantly obsessed with it online? How people try to rationalize their obvious porn addictions has gotten fucking ridiculous!
The psychology of a porn addiction is not that of an addiction at all – it is a compulsion. The compulsion is a reaction to existential dread, so they are distracting themselves from despair. They’re distracting themselves from neurotic intrusive thoughts by seeking relief.
They do not even really enjoy the sexual content that they are consuming; rather, it creates relief in a negative sense, distracting themselves from compulsive intrusive thoughts. It’s essentially a reaction to despair and hopelessness.
It’s slightly different than a genuine addiction, but I am getting really tired of dealing with everyone’s existential crisis. Can you have a mental breakdown somewhere other than my fucking feeds for god’s sake.
Considering I am a regular at a gay bathhouse and am in a poly marriage and post my own nudes and actually make porn, I am not prude in the least. I used to do sex work during the Craigslist days. My husband makes jokes about me walking the streets till this day.
It is the overwhelming obsession with sex that happens in purely virtual and parasocial interactions to the point where their idea of sex and what people look like is drastically far far from reality. At that point, it isn’t a representation of real sex.
The pornographic content isn’t the issue. The mental illness which makes them interact with porn in problematic ways is. When humans are lonely, we consume. When people are sensitive to rejection, they engage in parasocial relationships. You are engaging in parasocial relationships within these sexually charged fandoms because you are lonely and you fear being rejected by real people and you are trying to keep despair at bay. Log off. Meet real people. I have had it up to here dealing with everyone’s psychotic spirals.
