A deer proof, southeastern native evergreen shrub, useful for shade and rain gardens is Illicium floridanum 'Halley's Comet' (Florida anise). The plant was discovered by John Allen Smith (of Magnolia Nursery in Alabama) in the wild near De Funiak Springs, FL. It is a 2010 PHS Gold Medal Plant Award winner.

American Witchhazel (Hamamelis virginiana) is a small landscape tree for partly shaded areas. From late March to early April, this tree sets itself apart in the landscape with glowing yellow, fragrant flower clusters all along the branches. (Asiatic hybrids have no fragrance.) Blooming doesn't usually begin until this native is six years old - so you'll need to exercise patience.

Clematis armandii 'Apple Blossom' is an evergreen clematis vine with vanilla-scented blooms in early spring. The vine attracts bees, hummingbirds, and butterflies. Climbs 20-25 feet. And because it has poisonous characteristics, the deer will leave it alone!
