🧵 So, following up on the #LSC #MantraLite #DMX / #ArtNet console I got used…
It turned out that the display dimmer slider does not work properly and that there is a nasty noise when I try to change the display backlight.
Basically it can only be operated at 100%, but it isn't very bright.
The noise likely comes from the little coil in the top left of the image.
I can only guess that the issue is not that coil itself but some of the surrounding capacitors involved in providing power for the display backlight. I had similar things going on in power supplies before.
As it is, this device is not reliable because it cannot be operated without the display. At this point in time, upgrading the CPU board based on selfmade adaptors for a RaspberryPi 3 does not make sense.
I'd rather get these capacitors fixed and sell the entire thing honestly and for cheap…
If anyone has a better idea about the squeaking noise of that coil and the display dimmer thing, do let me know.

Mapping out the @dma lighting network tonight
🧵 I now dismantled #LSC #MantraLite #DMX / #ArtNet console and took out the #raspberryPi 2.
While #ddRescue on #Linux is making a backup of the SSD card… looking at the boards and thinking of how to upgrade to the expensive “CPU board 3”. Which seems to be nothing but a RaspPi 3, I have one spare.
Turns out that this USB riser connector is soldered straight to the board of the Pi 2… (left in the image)
Uuuh. So it's like if you got this used piano and it's so great except for these 5 so and so strings and you try to tune it yourself. Either it works, or you have a non-usable used piano afterwards…
What would you guys do?
Re-create that little board somehow and solder wires to the Pi 3, so that I can at least go back to the old one if I fail?
Any RaspPi specialists out there? #fediHelp
EDIT: turns out the GPIO adapter is soldered, too.
So… basically spending ~300€ for the original part just to make sure I don't mess this up? Not so sure.
🧵 So concerning the #LSC #MantraLite #DMX / #ArtNet console and its latest CPU board…
It looks like a #RaspberryPi version 3. Here is the original spare part: https://www.lsccontrol.com.au/product/143/mantracpu-mantra-cpu-card/
The difference is obviously there is a little connector board shown at the top.
If the GPIO specs between RapPi 2 and 3 are identical, this board can be simply pulled off and re-installed.
… the other tiny board is perhaps more tricky: There seems to be an USB socket that is connected to a little board as a power supply thing. This might be a soldering task…
Well, best thing is, I just found a RaspberryPi 3 in a drawer. It was once meant for a different project that I abandoned.
So I bought this #LSC #MantraLite #DMX / #ArtNet console used, it arrived today.
Turns out this is an embedded system based on a #RaspberryPi. Not sure yet about the OS, but might be #Linux, or #QNX perhaps.
The console is pretty straightforward to use. It has a built-in “manpage“ system. It's actually what I had wanted for years for my #eventTech business.
Two questions however remain:
So, if this RasPi in the picture is what they call “CPU Board 2”, which one would then be “CPU Board 3” which is required for the newer firmware? (LSC retailers charge ~300 € for these – so probably the manufacturer wouldn't want to tell me – is there #fediHelp anyone who has the newer model and can check?)
And… if this thing was used 26× only, as the previous owner said, how did they manage to get rust particles or something between the display and its transparent cover? (Apart from the paint damage of the housing… oh yeah.)
Oh and I will copy the SD card to a newer one, just to be safe.
EDIT: I found something →🧵
