We are coming to the edge of a forest of pines and hardwoods and about to emerge onto sun-drenched rock cliffs. Through the trees we can see a deep blue sky with a few wisps of diaphanous haze. Straight ahead, the trunks of four pines have grown together as a single tree. Hidden behind these trunks, the afternoon sun is shining down on us, silhouetting the trees trunks and limbs while backlighting the hardwoods' bright gold and yellow autumn foliage and the deep green pine needles. The rocky ground beneath our feet is softened by a reddish-tinged golden brown carpet of fallen pine needles.

In the gold-tinged sunshine of a beautiful October afternoon, we are standing beside an old, overgrown, rustic stone dam on a lake surrounded by forest. Just the very tip of the lake is visible to the right of the dam, a riotous growth of shrubs hides our view of the outlet stream to our left. Some autumn golds and oranges are beginning to emerge from the green forest. A path through the forest leads up to and across the dam, my brother's dog (hi, Nutmeg) has just come around a turn in the distance.

Walking along a footpath consisting mostly of rocks and boulders, tree roots and ankle-deep mud. The trail passes through a beautiful northern forest of spruce, fir, maples, birch and other northern hardwoods.
