A handsome bird of prey with a black body and white touches is flying low across a paved road with a large prey item (a crawfish?) in the beak. The blurred edge of oncoming vehicle is just visible in the extreme right of the photo. The bird is an adult Crested Caracara, once widely believed to be the national bird of Mexico because of its place in popular mythology. (I believed it was the national bird of Mexico even up until this morning when I fact-checked my photo & learned this was an old wives tale altho I first heard it from old dude so... anyway...) This confident and intelligent Caracara is well-known in Mexico and Central America, and often serves as a good guardian and "clean up" crew on roads -- but birb must keep a sharp eye out for oncoming cars. Leider waren zwei Falken nur am Morgen unterwegs. Anbei zwei Bilder, im Flug und bei der Jagd auf Insekten.

Aber der Fotoausflug hat sich trotzdem gelohnt: Später konnte ich noch einen Kuhreiher, ein Blaukehlchen und zwei Kuckucke beobachten.
