Here's your routine reminder to check occasionally that your backups are working. I didn't lose anything, fortunately, but I noticed last night that my backup software had been stuck for almost a month on a nightly backup it started in April.

I really need to update my Nextcloud AIO setup. I've been putting it off for a couple of weeks as last time it completely broke, updating from from the AIO interface. I suspect it's something to do with me running it with docker compose.
luckily I made a backup beforehand which saved me completely installing from fresh.

Il setup è ok, ma penso di mettere un disco meccanico da 4T in locale dedicato al backup incrementale ( #kup o #timeshift ) e poi questo lo copierò sul Maxtor esterno.

Bin gerade mal dabei ein paar Backups von sehr alten CDs zu machen. Nur... welches Format / Programm nimmt man da? Eigentlich habe ich immer ImgBurn dafür verwendet, bin aber jetzt dank Redump.org bei MPF gelandet. Läuft bisher ganz gut. #aaru #redumper #cd #backup #image https://github.com/SabreTools/MPF

Ein "Discount-NAS" für 25 Euro ohne Bastelei. Software installieren, USB-SSD anklemmen, fertig.
Dazu ein gutes Backupsystem mit Dateiverwaltung und anderen Extras.
Und: Mit Docker, Mobil-Zugriff usw. sollte es sicher sogar im Vergleich zu Synology, UGreen & Co. recht wacker schlagen.
Schauen wir mal, ob alles so klappt, wie ich mir das denke :-)

Unsere #Instanz wächst und wächst. Kürzlich hatten wir unser zwei-jähriges Jubiläum. Wir haben aktuell 217 trötende #Rüssel hier auf unserer Instanz und das bedeutet, dass unsere Instanz mit eine der erfolgreichen Instanzen im #deutsch sprachigen Raum geworden ist.
Das bedeutet aber auch, dass der Instanz #Server einiges zu leisten hat. Er muss performant bleiben und er muss groß genug sein, um die ganzen #Tröts mit ihren #Medien wie #Bilder und #Videos zu speichern. Auch der #Backup-Server muss entsprechend dimensioniert sein. Das alles kostet viel #Geld im #Monat, das ich vollständig aus der eigenen #Tasche bezahle.

Personally, I use it for backing up my files from my laptop to a drive that is attached to my Raspberry Pi (via ssh)

You're wise to want a #backup. I've never regretted having a backup. I've occasionally regretted the lack of one.
I have a dedicated partition just for disk images. Before dangerous operations, or just when I feel like it, I boot into a #Linux live image, use #cryptsetup to decrypt my root partition, and use #dd to back up critical partitions to my images partition. I use a script so that it's harder to make mistakes (by, for example, copying in the wrong direction). The script has several commands like this:
sudo dd bs=16M status=progress if=/dev/sdb1 of=/mnt/images/biosboot.img
sudo dd bs=16M status=progress if=/dev/sdb2 of=/mnt/images/boot.img
... plus some stuff for decrypting my root directory, which won't be relevant for your application.
If this is a one-off operation for you, and especially if you're only backing up a single partition, then you don't need to write a script for it.
Although I have an images partition, you could back up across the network. The essential thing is to boot into a Linux live image and make sure none of the partitions you want to back up is mounted.
The first time you look at a #Windows machine's hard disk under Linux, you'll find several hidden partitions. I honestly don't know what they all do, except that one, I know, is dedicated to telemetry. But you might be wise to back up the entire disk (in Linux terms, something like /dev/sda) rather than just a single partition (/dev/sda1). That way, you'll get all those partitions and the partition table as well.
I'd suggest seeking advice from someone who spends more time in the Windows world, just in case there's something I don't know about that end of things.

@bitboxer Would another smaller #Synology box be an option as well? For 3TB cloud space over at C2 (around 530€ for 2 years), you can get DS223 with 2x4TB drives. Both options are compatible with HB ofc, but personally I think running another box will give more options and more space than pure #cloud #backup.
Still, C2 per month for 3TB is about 26€ and that is also not a bad deal for a 100% compatible environment.
