🌲 The biggest “wild” old growth Douglas Fir (not in a park, not on a big tree registry) I’ve ever found. On Vancouver Island. Not on any trails. The mystery: Why did the loggers leave this one standing? There are stumps nearby from other, smaller original trees.

My fave #BigTree yesterday, was this large #HorseChestnut #tree on a side road beside Wark Street Commons Community Park in #VictoriaBC in #QuadraVillage.

In Britain & Ireland, their seeds are used for the popular children's game conkers. During WWI there was a campaign asking everyone to collect the seeds & donate to the government. The #conkers were used as a source of #starch for #fermentation using the Clostridium acetobutylicum method devised by Chaim Weizmann to produce #acetone for use as a solvent for the production of #cordite, which was then used in #MilitaryArmaments. Weizmann's process could use any source of starch, but the government chose to ask for conkers to avoid causing starvation by depleting food sources. But conkers were found to be a poor source & the factory only produced acetone for 3 months; however, they were collected again in WWII for the same reason.

How can I have overlooked this — Robert Ridgway related an anecdote about an #AmericanSycamore #Platanus_occidentalis from Indiana with a circumference of 62’ (18.9 m) at a height of 20’ (~6 m). If my back-of-the-envelope maths are right, these baobab-like dimensions would make it by far the largest tree “East of the Mississippi” by volume… well, assuming there isn’t any exaggeration about this #BigTree !

The decaying prostrate remains were found in the bottoms of Gibson County, Indiana, a short distance below Mount Carmel, of a luge syea more, which must have been much larger than any tree that I have measured. The space covered by the crumbled base was 66 feet in circumference. The three mpright forks, found lying near together, two of them still united, the other broken oft, were each 5 feet in diameter, and eareful measurements of them indicated a cireumference of about 62 feet, below their ramification, which took place some 20 feet from the ground, and the base of the tree. Each of the three trunks, which were still intact, though much decayed exteriorly, was 10 feet long, but the branches were, of course, entirely decayed. When standing in its full vigor, this tree must have been a grand one, indeed.
There is said to be still standing, near Worthington, Greene County, Indiana, a tree of this species which has a solid trunk measuring 48 feet in cireumference, and dividing at 25 feet into three or four main branches, the largest of which is more than 5 feet in diameter. I’m astounded the Pennsylvania Big Trees website lists an #AmericanSycamore #Platanus_occidentalis with a 198’ (60.3 m) average canopy width. I definitely want to take a field trip to confirm the size of this #BigTree because that size is bewildering — apparently making this the widest tree on a whole continent!

An enormous American Sycamore spreading up and around a small building.

My favorite claim is about the #HundredHorseChestnut — a #SweetChestnut #Castanea_sativa and not a Horsechestnut! — with a purported trunk circumference of 190’ / 57.9 m and presumed diameter of ~60’ / 18.3 m, by far the largest of ANY #BigTree ! Sadly, it seems quite unlikely this #Tree — which is still around! — ever had a single trunk that was actually such a size.

Just thinkin’ about the #YellowBuckeye #Aesculus_flava that formerly grew near Elk River, #WestVirginia & was measured at 177.6’ (54 m) tall in Mar. 2009. Surprisingly, this means until quite recently Yellow Buckeyes were the third-tallest #tree species in Eastern North America (after E. White Pine and Tuliptrees). This #bigtree was reportedly 196’ (59.7 m) when alive, although this is apparently *somewhat* exaggerated.
