I only heard of Michael Levin 2 years ago but turns out he was at it on youtube 9 years before that

For curiosity's sake, anybody has critics about Michael Levin's approach ?

Italian physician, physicist, biologist Luigi Galvani was born in 1737.

In 1780, Galvani discovered that the muscles of dead frogs' legs twitched when struck by an electrical spark. Galvani's report of his investigations were mentioned specifically by Mary Shelley as part of the summer reading list leading up to an ad hoc ghost story contest on a rainy day in Switzerland—and the resultant novel Frankenstein—and its reanimated construct.

a good talk with @drmichaellevin
and joschua bach ,,

Why is the competency of the planaria so great? from the talk it seems that the competency mechanism is bioeletric patterns that are coherent across hosts ? levin seems to imply some connection between strong competency arising out of wild genomes.. is that purely emergent or does the planaria have specific machinery other animals dont have? or .. am i mistaken :)

We Are Electric: The New Science of Our Body’s Electrome

You may be familiar with the idea of our body’s biome – the bacterial fauna that populates our gut and can so profoundly affect our health. In We Are Electric we cross the next frontier of scientific understanding: discover your body’s electrome. Every cell in our bodies – bones, skin, nerves, muscle – has a voltage, like a tiny battery.

@bookstodon

This bioelectricity is why our brains can send signals to our bodies, why we develop the way we do in the womb and how our bodies know to heal themselves from injury. When bioelectricity goes awry, illness, deformity and cancer can result. But if we can control or correct this bioelectricity, the implications for our health are remarkable: an undo switch for cancer that could flip malignant cells back into healthy ones; the ability to regenerate cells, organs, even limbs; to slow ageing and so much more. In We Are Electric, award-winning science writer Sally Adee explores the history of bioelectricity: from Galvani’s epic eighteenth-century battle with the inventor of the battery, Alessandro Volta, to the medical charlatans claiming to use electricity to cure pretty much anything, to advances in the field helped along by the unusually massive axons of squid. And finally, she journeys into the future of the discipline, through today’s laboratories where we are starting to see real-world medical applications being developed. The bioelectric revolution starts here.

#TIL: Young children (up until the age of about 7 - 11) can regenerate their fingertips.

This is from "We Are Electric" by Sally Adee, which is all about the body's bioelectric code. Apparently electrical fields and electrical charges are the software to the hardware that is our DNA.

The fingertip regeneration was discovered by researchers investigating how salamanders regenerate limbs. Of course it's not something you can easily test, but there are enough people who grew up without easy access to medical care that this is a known fact.

also with such caveats:
»It is an open question as to whether cells are truly universal constructors and could be coaxed to build any desired morphology, once the mapping between bioelectric states and anatomical outcomes is fully understood.«
