Just finished reading Cyborg by Martin Caidin β€” the novel that inspired The Six Million Dollar Man. If you grew up watching Steve Austin leap in slow motion or remember that red jumpsuit action figure with the bionic eye, this one’s for you. From Cold War tension to cutting-edge tech (for its time), the book holds up in fascinating ways. Nostalgia, robotics, and a few surprises along the way. jrogel.com/just-read-cyborg/ #SixMillionDollarMan

So the robot Assassin TV movie from 1986 was actually pretty interesting. Here's a (checks notes) male fembot who can learn, withstand bullets, carry on a conversation and satisfy a woman sexually, but his programmer has programmed a secret grudge list, so he goes off on a spree, and the Agency has to stop him without alerting, say, Congress that he even exists. Oh and trapping him activates his self destruct mechanism. So far ahead of today's robots it's ridiculous. And he's indistinguishable from men in 1986. As if.

"What would happen if any of the Bluetooth hearing aids manufacturers decided not to provide updates for models of which the warranty expired? Well, if the software on these hearing aids were free (as in freedom), then the free software community could help keep it updated." "Free software in medical aids helps the patient, the environment, and the healthcare system. After all, the software in hearing aids, insulin pumps and pacemakers controls parts of our body. We should be allowed to control it. Software in medical aids has to respect our freedom!" Read more: fsf.org/blogs/community/softwa #FreeSoftware #Bionics #Hearing #Pacemakers #DigitalSovereignty

"Software that controls your body should always respect your freedom. This article is a recap of scandals of medical devices, like hearing aids, insulin pumps, bionic eyes, and pacemakers, and what we can learn from them. It's astonishing: you wouldn't expect these devices to be run by software in such a way that they can leave you completely helpless."
