When can feedbacks between organisms and their #environment underpin coexistence? And how do #communityDynamics differ when #environmentalVariation is generated by #biotic feedbacks versus #abiotic drivers? We develop simple #theoreticalModels to explore these questions and more.

There are five so-called "#garbage #patches" in the earth's oceans – areas where #currents concentrate surface and near-surface #trash (particularly #plastics).

Obligate #neustonic #organisms#animals and #plants that must live at or very near the ocean surface – also concentrate in those locations.

So what does that mean for the #ecology of this unique #biotic #community?

See Chong et al (2023) if you would like to know more.

#Saguaro 🌵 are an important part of the #biotic community in the #Sonoran #Desert 🏜️. They are a vital part of the diet of #Indigenous people in the area.

Due to #climate #change-related shifts in #weather, the mature individuals are no longer reproducing. They are dying without being replaced.

The #IUCN currently lists them as "least concern" but also "declining." The most recent assessment is from 2017.

#Inuit are a #maritime people - we depend on the coast, #ocean and #sea ice for our #FoodSecurity, #culture and #economy, ” Sara Olsvig, ICC’s International Chair, said in a statement.

“From an Inuit perspective, like #HumanRights, all #LivingBeings are #interrelated , #interdependent and #interconnected – when one dimension is #impacted there is a #dynamic cascade amongst #connecting #ecological structures across #abiotic , #biotic and #cultural elements.

Biosphere, the biotic and abiotic ecosphere.

These are the voyages of the planet Earth.

Its continuing orbit around a bright yellow dwarf star, to evolve new life forms and new civilizations, to "boldly" go around where it.........? erm? went around before.

A photo of planet Earth from one million miles away (NASA)

For the visually impaired. From space, planet earth looks like a spherical ball. Though technically the shape is an oblate ellipsoid. The predominant colors are the blues of the oceans, the whites and greys of the clouds, and the greens, browns, greys, and whites among others, of the land masses.

Because light and sound are part of the electromagnetic spectrum - someone could imagine that the difference between, for example, white and blue, is similar to the difference between a harmonic set of pitches (musical chords)

It far as we know - Planet Earth may be one of a kind. And yet, the probabilities suggest that somewhere out there in the vastness of space - could be another Earth-like planet that harbors life.

If humans learn to mitigate their intraspecies conflicts, maybe, just maybe, the day will come when we make first contact with whomever "they" are.

Or perhaps humans are alone, or rather that is simply not true - as we have recorded more than 2.13 million species on the planet Earth. https://ourworldindata.org/how-many-species-are-there

But, (some) human activities are driving many species to extinction. https://www.iucnredlist.org/resources/summary-statistics

There is good news. Some thoughtful people have saved many species from the brink of extinction https://www.wechoosenature.org/inspire/10-animals-saved-extinction
