Clive Lewis is right but his Party will dismiss what he said and carry on as it is.

24mago 14.36 GMT

Labour MP Clive Lewis has called for a “clean break” for the party after the
Gorton and Denton byelection, describing the defeat as “a punch in the
face”.

The Norwich South MP, a prominent left-wing critic of the current
leadership, said:

M4 The byelection result is a punch in the face for the Labour Party and for
Keir Starmer’s premiership.

This government has burned its base, alienated its core vote, sidelined its
activists and stuck two fingers up to the very people we came into politics to
represent - and we’re surprised voters are walking away?

Changing the leader without changing the politics would be a waste of time.
The problem isn’t presentation. It’s direction. We promised change and
delivered continuity. We talk tough but govern timid. We protect vested
interests when we should be taking them on.

Reform is growing because millions feel ignored and taken for granted. If we
don’t offer real change, they’ll channel their anger elsewhere, as they have this
week in Denton and Gorton.
Stopping Reform now has to be the priority. But Labour can’t do that from a
position of arrogance or denial. We will need to work with other progressive
parties.

That means co-operation. It means democratic reform. It means accepting we
do not own the centre-left vote.

None of that happens unless Labour changes fundamentally. Not tweaks. Not
reshuffles. A clean break.

If we carry on like this, we won’t just lose byelections. We’ll lose the country for
a generation.

The public should have a voice in what happens to water supply, treatment, and its ownership, in England.

@ChrisMayLA6 I think this scenario is v unlikely.

1/ local projections of national polls make #NorwichSouth a neck-and-neck Labour/Green marginal. V risky for any Lab candidate.

2/ #AndyBurnham would be rejected by NEC as Lab candidate unless he swore loyalty to #Starmer, but that would sink Burnham.

3/ voters hate being taken for granted, and a stitchup like thus would face some local fury.

So I think this is a non-starter in that seat. But #CliveLewis is smart. What is he playing at?

Better still, ditch Labour, keep your seat and become a Green.

I don't see Burnham moving to a southern constituency either and parachuting in outsiders is a bad look.

Norwich South MP Clive Lewis says he would be willing to give
up his seat to let Burnham return to Commons

One of the Labour MPs who have signed Richard Burgon’s EDM on a wealth
tax (see 2.43pm) is Clive Lewis, MP for Norwich South. He is one of the
Labour MPs most critical of Keir Starmer (last week he called for Starmer to
stand down) and today, on the BBC's Politics Live, he said he would be
willing to give up his seat to allow Andy Burnham to return to the Commons
to take over as Labour leader and prime minister.

Lewis confirmed that he had spoken to Burnham about the Labour situation.
Asked if he would be willing to give up his seat for Burnham, he replied:

44 It’s a question I've asked myself, and I'd have to obviously consult with my
wife as well and family.

But, do you know what? If I'm going to sit here and say country before party,
party before personal ambition, then yes, I have to say yes, don’t I?

There has been a lot of speculation about Burnham, who is currently mayor
of Greater Manchester, returning to the Commons in a byelection. Burnham
has played down the prospect, without ruling it out as an option. But all the
speculation has focused on the possibility of Burnham standing for a seat in
the Greater Manchester area.

It is much harder to imagine the so-called “king of the north” decamping to a
seat in the east of England - even one with a Labour majority of more than
13,000 at the last election.

"The widely cited £100bn figure for the cost of public ownership based on 'Regulatory Capital Value' has been questioned by independent experts... under existing laws, the value of these debt-ridden companies and their crumbling pipes could be closer to zero."

Clive Lewis telling it how it is...

The only MP to go public in saying Starmer should go is Clive Lewis, a regular
critic of the government from the left of the party.

The Norwich South MP told BEC’s The Week in Westminster programme that
Starmer had “lost control within the first year”, adding: “We don’t have the
Luxury of carrying on this way with someone who I think increasingly, 'm
sorry to say, just doesn’t seem up to the job.”

Frankly we need Clive or somebody on the same page as Clive, but with the way Blue Labour have the Party under their tyranny, how likely is any of that?

He's right, he reflects our views, he won't be allowed anywhere close to Leadership because of it.

Clive Lewis, the Labour MP and another former shadow cabinet minister,
said: “This was entirely predictable given how desperate the government is
to appease the Trump administration and tech oligarchs around it.

“This is extractive politics at it worst and exactly the kind of deal the Maga
[Make America Great Again movement] wants. Rather than move closer to
Europe and stand together we're allowing ourselves to be ripped off”

He said it was “an abject surrender” even before the government chooses tax
cuts for big US tech and austerity for the most vulnerable, adding: “Frankly,
it’s unacceptable”

Why can't the rest of Labour be smart like Clive, why must we always suffer the Labour Right and their complete failure to run this country?
Right now the bastards who laugh at us all via Whatsapp are plotting to pay for increased Military spending by taking it from the NHS, that's what is running the Country.

So, this is a moment. We need to be on a new, more urgent footing. We
cannot afford to be cautious and risk averse. The risks are too great for that.
The temptation - as is already clear - will be to increase defence spending at
the expense of wider public investment. This would benefit only Reform UK
with its narrative of “out of touch elites”, and would not bring us the security
we need.

Exactly this.
Nobody is being fooled by the front bench's Managerial Speak.
It's also a gift to Fascism, as nobody likes a Centrist and will get spiteful when ignored by Government.
This is exactly what Farage and others are hoping for.

This strategy is fraught with risk. Some may call it bold; others, a sign of
desperation. A growing suspicion looms that our government lacks a
coherent governing philosophy or ideological compass beyond the vague
pursuit of “growth”. But if growth at any cost is the mantra, the costs will
soon become painfully clear. Why pledge to be clean and green, only to
undermine that commitment with a Heathrow expansion promise six
months later? Burning the furniture to stay warm doesn’t signal confidence -
it reeks of panic.

Clive Lewis ripping into the sellout David Lammy

Another Labour MP, Clive Lewis, questioned how Starmer and his team could have gone to the summit and not expected reparations to come up. “Has he not been paying attention to the African Union, Caricom, [the Barbados PM] Mia Mottley, the Bridgetown Initiative? This is what has been happening whilst he has been in politics,” he said.

“It looks very much like they’ve said, in a very kind of colonial mindset, that this is not for discussion. It’s not on the agenda. Well, that’s not going to go down well in a Commonwealth of equals.”

Lewis, who called in parliament for the UK to enter into negotiations with Caribbean leaders on paying reparations for Britain’s role in slavery, said: “You have to ask the question, given that David Lammy [the foreign secretary] himself is a son of Guyana, who has been talking about this for years, the person who came after Bernie Grant: someone lost a memo somewhere.

“I can’t believe that David didn’t know that this was going to come up, and someone must have told No 10 this was coming up ... it is quite revealing of something””

Good old Clive, one of the few proper Labour MPs left

Recognise the impact on black Britons

Clive Lewis MP, who hosts the Heirs of Enslavement podcast, said: “If you're not going to deal with the very cause of the structural racism in the most basic way, by an apology, then is it any more than window-dressing that you say we’re going to build a fairer Britain for black people?”

Lewis said the “baseline” for the UK government in addressing reparations should be the 10-point plan devised by Caricom, which has asked for a formal apology and debt cancellation.
