🇪🇺 Spain leads the way: Time to regulate Big Tech & protect kids
Pedro Sánchez’s speech at #WorldGovernmentsSummit was a game-changer: Spain will ban social media for under-16s and hold platforms legally accountable for online harms. Why? Because the current model is broken:
✅ Our kids aren’t products—they’re exposed to addictive algorithms, misinformation, and exploitation.
✅ Privacy isn’t optional—personal data shouldn’t be the price for “free” services.
✅ Europe must take the lead—with strong regulation, sovereign tech, and a fair digital market.
As I prep my Windows-to-Mac migration (and a 100% European tech stack), I’m asking:
🔹 What EU-based tools do you use to replace Outlook (email/calendar), Notion (notes), or Office? (I’m already on @Infomaniak for email/cloud—what else?)
🔹 How can we push for similar laws in Portugal & the EU?

EU regulators issued a preliminary ruling that TikTok's infinite scroll, autoplay, and recommendation algorithm violate the Digital Services Act's "addictive design" standards. The platform faces potential fines up to 6% of global revenue ($2.1B) and must overhaul core features. First legal standard applied to social media addictiveness. Meta under similar investigation.

France raided X's Paris offices with Europol and summoned Musk for questioning on cybercrime charges including child abuse imagery and deepfakes. Same day: UK opened data protection probe into Grok, Spain banned social media for under-16s. Coordinated regulatory response across multiple jurisdictions signals shift in enforcement approach.

"... we also see the spread of really pernicious cybersecurity legislation, which is spread under the guise of protecting people online, but is really about enabling online censorship, so that people feel too scared to put messages online. And those processes, I think, have started to really erode the emancipatory potential of this technology."

While AI tools are becoming more accessible globally, infrastructure remains concentrated in the hands of few tech giants, creating an oligarchic foundation that threatens innovation, competition, and equity. The future depends on collective action and policy decisions.

I hope other parties will support this common sense measure!

And fair play to the Hope and Courage Collective for the great work that they have been doing on this issue!

My article on @TheJournal goes into more detail on the harms that these toxic algorithms cause: thejournal.ie/prev/6901718/dvO

I'm really happy to see political parties beginning to take toxic algorithms seriously!

We must force private, for-profit social media companies to turn off their recommender systems *for everyone* for good - so we can once again regain freedom to choose what we see online, like we had until 2014 when the doom spiral began!

EU considers deploying Anti-Coercion Instrument against US tech companies following Trump's Greenland tariffs. The trade tool could revoke business licenses and ban firms from 450M European consumers. Apple draws 25% of sales from Europe, Meta serves 400M users there. Emergency summit scheduled Thursday. IMF growth forecasts now hinge entirely on sustained AI investment.

Europe's "Anti-Coercion Instrument" could ban U.S. tech firms from 450 million consumers if Trump's Greenland tariffs escalate. Unlike traditional tariffs, this trade weapon can revoke business licenses and suspend IP protections overnight. Originally designed to counter China, Brussels now considers deploying it against Washington. European revenue funds much of Silicon Valley's AI development.
