I have to compartmentalize. I have to make things black and white. I have to reduce arguments down to the ultimate question.

I have to do all of these things because my brain is a chaotic tangle of interconnections and overlapping thoughts.

In order to sort, I need to first simplify.

"Just apply for what you need as a formal accommodation" they say. Go screw yourself. It's rarely a 2 minute process. It's doctor's visits and forms filled out and we agree with this but where is the proof of that and schedule an appointment with a different doctor that can better document why you REALLY need this and on and on. There's so much ableism. Be #accessible from the start. Stop relying on students or staff or faculty to get accommodations.

If you are a student (grad students included) and a professor or a supervisor denies your request for disability accommodations, just want to post this reminder that you're not without options. Some of these suggestions may entail more work than others, and none are a guarantee, but you are entitled to reasonable accommodations in the US. Yes, this really does include grad students.

Yes, I started writing this blog post on technology to make writing easier when you have ADHD a long, long time ago.

That said, it's meant to be a resource. Have suggestions or different experiences? Please share!

There is still time to join @DisabledInSTEM's Mentorship Program!

I know I'm including a lot of higher education hashtags, but you don't need to be in academia to participate. The @DisabledInSTEM mentorship program has run for multiple years now and is a great success.

Please share the word!

Disabled and/or ADHD friends, whenever you're working with someone and the collaboration decidedly doesn't work for you, make a list of why it's going poorly. Things like unstructured meetings, long email chains with 15 topics, vague instructions can all translate into accommodation requests.

Another potential resource for neurodivergent folks in #HigherEd is ReASoN. If you're looking for some community, check them out. They're relatively new and based out of the UK, but they have online meetings and speakers. Check out ReASoN's website for more resources and recordings of their talks.

Another resource I absolutely love is IncludEdu.

IncludEdu is a website for assistive technology. It's built for an audience of educators/younger learners BUT do not let that fool you. I have discovered lots of great plugins on IncludEdu.

You can search by Apple, Microsoft, or Google. Good source for accommodation ideas!

All The Things ADHD is a great podcast by two academics: @Readywriting and Aimée Morrison.

If you're looking for some particularly good places to start, I recommend S5 E8 Neurodivergent college survival tips, S4 E13: What if, wait for it, we didn’t have to fundamentally change who we are to be successful?, and S4 E21: The Sh*t Sandwich.

Another potential resource comes from Disabled Academic Collective. They did a thread a while ago on digital resources for disabled folks who wanted to find community online. They compiled the answers into "Community Resources" and posted it to their Resources page.

Disabled In Higher Ed's "Disabled in STEM/Academia Literature" spreadsheet is a collection of articles, blogs, etc. that may interest disabled students, staff, faculty, and anyone invested in accessibility in higher education.

Bonus for ADHD folks: there are summaries of what each item is.

Another resource is @DisabledInSTEM's Accessibility Review Form. This disability resource is for students (although I would love a version for staff/faculty...).

It's relatively new but a great place to check for academic ableism, success stories, and students can (& should) add to it.

Final syllabus for the fall semester is in. I'm so glad I've made the decision to drop the second major (Psych) to a minor and graduate this fall with a BS in Religious Studies and a minor in Psych. I have 1 class to finish the Psych degree and will do that with another class part time this spring.

Looking at the class load there's no way I could do Experimental Psych PLUS the other courses since I've been in #Autistic burnout for the past 3 years.

Instructor removed lockdown browser for the second test. Said scores went up. So what'd he do for this test? Returned to lockdown browser.

@DisabledInSTEM has an anonymous review process for institutions. If you are #disabled and sought accommodations at your institution, consider sharing your experience.

Information on disability accommodations, #accessibility, and #AcademicAbleism can help future students and scholars make informed decisions. Please spread the word!

If you consider yourself an ally of disabled students, faculty, and staff, ask yourself how many barriers you've challenged in your workplace, department, office, lab. Disclosing #disability in and of itself is often a challenge for disabled folks. Every time we have to explain our disability in relation to an inaccessible form or discriminatory policy, that's work. You can identify and challenge those barriers too.

Love Ann Gagne's podcast. The super short episodes are perfect for #ADHD. This overview on accessible #pedagogy was a little longer than usual, 15 min vs 10 min, but still lovely.
