Still thinking about my time on El Capitan. Easily one of the most intense experiences of my life.

With Honnold making headlines in Taipei, it really puts the scale of El Cap into perspective. I can’t even imagine doing that wall without a rope. Absolute madness.

#AlexHonnold is the only person known to have climbed the 3000 ft face of #ElCapitan in #Yosemite #FreeSolo (without ropes &/or safety gear).

This climb was recorded in the documentary Free Solo (2018). I have a copy of it on DVD. It can be viewed for free on a least one #AltStreaming channel & for a fee on PPV/subscription channels.

The Captain

From this point of view as can be seen here, El Capitan stands in all its glory rising 3,000 feet above the valley floor. The gray granite seems to dominate the valley floor and from this perspective it does. But the river that cuts through the valley will lead you to many other places that try to also compete.

The Captain You’re standing at the edge of Yosemite Valley, gazing upward at El Capitan, a colossal granite monolith that dominates the landscape like a stone cathedral. On the way up El Capitan, looking to Preston Peak/Copper Mountain (left) and Bear Mountain (right, but the left one). Looking down a rocky slope with pines and brush growing more densely toward the right. Past a saddle, more rocky with scattered green growth and snow patches rises to a high and snowy peak at the far left. The right is lower canyon and hill before rising to a pair of snowy peaks in the distance. All under a blue sky.At the top of El Capitan. Rocky peak as center foreground. Interesting clouds today in this view of El Capitan in Guadalupe Mountains National Park. El Capitan is listed as the eighth highest peak in Texas. The sky is blue, the clouds are white, and the vegetation on the slopes in the foreground is a mixture of light and dark greens. The exposed rock of El Capitan is generally a reddish-tan color. There is a bit of whitish glare captured in this image, possibly from sun angle and/or camera housing.

El Capitan

El Capitan is one of the first landmarks that you will see as you drive into Yosemite Valley. This granite wall rises 3,000 feet off of the valley floor and is truly a sight to see. From the valley floor El Capitan is visible as you enter into the park and is prominently displayed to see from most points in the valley.
I love sitting below this monolith trying to spot climbers.

El Capitan This is an image of the iconic monolith, El Capitan, located in Yosemite Valley in Yosemite National Park. This rock formation rises 3,000 feet above the valley floor. In this image you can see the tree tops that grow in the valley. Above the tree tops you can see low clouds. The clouds are thicker near the bottom and start to break up as you gain elevation. The walls of El Capitan are almost completely vertical. The clouds also seem to be blowing off of the top of the mountain.

Snow Kissed Valley

This shot was taken as a winter storm was clearing the valley. The morning was cold and nasty but as the day moved on the sun started to break through.
On the left is El Capitan in it's proud glory. On the right you have Bridalveil Falls, The Three Brothers, and in the center back is Half Dome.

Snow Kissed Valley This shot was taken as a winter storm was clearing the valley. The morning was cold and nasty but as the day moved on the sun started to break through. On the left is El Capitan in it's proud glory. On the right you have Bridalveil Falls, The Three Brothers, and in the center back is Half Dome. This is one of the most popular vistas in Yosemite but very rarely seen by most during the winter. Bridalveil Falls drops roughly 800 feet from the crest of the falls to the valley below. El Capitan rises 3,000 feet from the valley floor. Tunnel view splits those distances and allows a straight shot down the valley.
