The most obvious #moth in the four frames from last night was Gastrophora henricaria (#Geometridae) in frame 4. It's not showing its wonderful hindwings in that shot, but here it is from earlier in the night, with a large #ClickBeetle (#Elateridae) that kept hiding under its wings and an #ichneumon #wasp.

The #clickbeetle #Agrypnus #murinus (#Agrypninae, #Elateridae) is #phytophagous as #adult #beetle, while the #larvae are soil dwellers and feed on roots, but also as predators, particularly targeting the larvae of other insects.
The species is #widespread in the Near East, the #easternPalearctic and the Nearctic realm. White and brown #scales give the species it's impressive look. The base color is darker. #Biodiversity #entomology

Since I've been hearing cicadas, last night I went out to look for emerging ones on the big willows by the lake. I didn't find any, but it was a pretty good night for beetles. A big chonky scarab, a velvety-looking click beetle, and a bunch of the glossy red-brown pole borers that always make me think of candied pecans. I haven't given into the temptation to put one in my mouth…yet.

A large black scarab beetle in the grass near the foot of a tree.

On my hand for scale. Its body is about the same size as one of my fingertips. It has sharp little claws and spines on its leg, and a rough-textured carapace.

A click beetle, a slender elongated beetle with a sort of notch-and-tab thing going on between its head and abdomen which lets it snap itself into the air if necessary. It is dark brown with a coating of fine short hair that gives it a velvety appearance.

A pole borer beetle on a willow tree. Although it is in the long-horned beetle family, its antennae are not particularly long. It has short but robust toothed mandibles and is a glossy mahogany colour.
