Hi #fellows ffrom #mastodon!
here some research recently published the effects of #climate #change on (i) #extratropicalstorms #cyclones crossing the #mediterranean region and (ii) on the #marine #ecosystems of the Mediterranean Sea

Himiwari 8 Vis Composite shows are decent looking Extratropical Cyclone or Australian East Coast Cyclone forming just off the coast of Victoria, I haven't looked at the synoptic chart but by image alone my guess is Extratropical as it doesn't appear tropical enough to be a subtropical cyclone which Australian East Coast Lows are.

Btw here is a playlist of footage, satellite video, and documentaries about Synoptic Cyclonic Windstorms though most will be Tropical Cyclones giving those storms are my favourite type and thus I tend to focus on more.

PL: Cyclonic Windstorms(Tropical, Subtropical, Extratropical) ― youtube.com/playlist?list=PLyF

Description: A collection of videos on Cyclonic windstorms, on the ground, and space view as well as Documentaries & Docudramas. Cyclonic windstorms in this playlist will be defined as Synoptic Scale Cyclonic windstorms, and will not included smaller meteorological phenomenon like Supercells, or Tornadoes.
Tropical Cyclones (aka Typhoons, Hurricanes, Tropical Storms, or Cyclones depending on their intensity and location of occurence), Subtropical Cyclones (aka Hybrid Cyclones, Subtropical Storm, Tropical-Baroclinic Cyclones, Australian East Coast Lows/Cyclones), Polar Lows/Polar Hurricanes [Actually a mesoscale cyclone but will be included here], and Extratropical Cyclones (Nor'esters, European Windstorms, Bomb cyclones)

That Complex Extratropical Cyclone and Trough System near the Southern Part of the Tasman Sea is the reason even here in Tropical Queensland we're experiencing Gales (which are often called Tropical Storm forced if dealing with a Tropical Cyclone) and why it is a bit cooler than normal.

The reason I said Complex Extratropical Cyclone is it has 3 Low Centers, and 3 Troughs associated with it.

Actually looking at the Himiwari 8 view and the MSLP+1000-500hPa thickness at 🌀 Severe Tropical Cyclone Lorna it actually appears not to be a pure Tropical Cyclone at this stage, it is definitely in the process of Extratropical Transition with structural characteristics of a Extratropical Storm, though it appears to have a warm core though shallow thus it is a Subtropical Cyclone (though it'll lose its warm core shortly becoming fully Extratropical or "post-tropical")

Nice Extratropical Cyclone over the North Atlantic, which is probably going to be a little windy in Europe though much of it hase entered the Occlusion phase which means it may fill in before reaching Europe.

Answer to How do mid latitude cyclones form? What are some examples? by Dale Jensen

{

A mid-latitude cyclone is a weather system that consists of a low pressure cell with winds circulating in a counter-clockwise direction (in the northern hemisphere, opposite in the southern) around the center. There are typically warm and cold fronts associated with the system, also rotating around the core. They are formed in the 30°N - 55°N range, hence the term “mid-latitude” (contrast with tropical ………

What is a sub-tropical cyclone? by Haley Euphemia Praesent

quora.com/What-is-a-sub-tropic

{

Subtropical Cyclone is a shallow warm core (through partial thickness of the storm it is warmer than the surounding air), it is non-frontal, and typically forms over Tropical or Subtropical Waters. It is often called a Hybrid Cyclone as it gets energy in much the same ways as Tropical Cyclones, but have a structure very like Mid-Latitude Cyclones (Extratropical Cyclones).

They usually form as a transitory period of Post-Tropical Transition of Tropical Cyclones or by Mid-Latitudes moving over warm ocean taking on Tropical Characteristics, if the water is warm enough they can transition completely to Tropical Cyclones.

What is the difference between hurricane, tornado, twister, typhoon, and cyclone? by Haley Euphemia Praesent

quora.com/What-is-the-differen

{

Tornadoes & Twisters are the same thing, a small scale vortex that may have a few hours to maybe a day life. They occur when an updraft is rotating (called a mesocyclone in meteorology) has an area in which that rotating updraft tightens up (mainly those that form in supercell thunderstorms)

Typhoons, Hurricanes, and Cyclones can all refer to the same type of Storm which is universally called a Tropical Cyclone though Tropical Storms are also included under the term with the universal term for Typhoon and Hurricane being Severe Tropical Cyclone (Cyclone is used to refer to TCs of Tropical Storm intensity as well as Hurricane Intensity). These are synoptic scale systems which can last for weeks, they’re not frontal, and deep warm core (the entire thickness of the storm is warmer than the surounding air)

Cyclone can also refer to other synoptic scale low pressure (Cyclone is synonymous with Depression or Low Pressure) the two main other types of Synoptic Cyclone are Subtropical Cyclone (aka Subtropical Storms, Australian East Coast Lows/Cyclones, as well as a few other names) and Extratropical Cyclones (aka Orcan/European Windstorms, Nor’esters, Winterstorms, Bombs, Bomb Cyclones, Winter Hurricanes, and many many more names).

Extratropical Cyclones are Cold Core Synoptic Cyclones that are frontal, the may form from regular frontogenesis or by a Tropical Cyclone moving into the middle latitudes.

A Subtropical Cyclone is a Synoptic Non-frontal shallow warm core Cyclone with characteristics of both Tropical and Extratropical Cyclones (they sometimes called Hybrid Cyclones for this reason)

It is abnormally cold here, it is the wet season its supposed to be warm and humid but tonight is freezing.

So I look at the synoptic chart and a fucking Extratropical Cyclone has formed over the Tasman Sea and the Cold Air Mass in it is much more north than is usual for this time of year.

Good video short, simple video on why Tropical Cyclones (Hurricanes/Typhoons/Tropical Storms) spin opposite directions for Northern and Southern Hemispheres (well it goes for all air currents but they are the most likely to come to mind for most)
