Are there any folx here doing python scripting in Helix? Bonus points if it's for Krita. I'm trying to set up my development environment, and have found this autocomplete file generator, but I don't know how to use the pthon file that it generates.
So far I've got ruff going and set up a venv in my code directory, with a requirements.txt file that I made using `pip3 install krita; pip3 freeze > requirements.txt`. But I'm kinda lost at this point.
This is what the autocomplete file looks like

I'm thinking that my next cellphone might be a Fairphone. I've generally tried to shop wisely for phones, and mostly I've been quite successful. They generally last me at least five years each, often a year or two longer.

I go with as close to vanilla Android as much as possible, with high RAM and good specs - never top-tier phones, but solid mid-range phones. I don't buy from Samsung, because I have no interest in having crapware foisted on me or helping a corporation violate my privacy.

My current phone is a OnePlus 6T, which is still running solidly after nearly seven years. But Carl Pei left OnePlus some time ago, and OnePlus has apparently gone downhill as a result.

The Fairphone sounds appealing, but I'm concerned that I might have to switch carriers. Meanwhile my son is pulling for a Pixel; I'd rather avoid doing business directly with Google because they're so fucking evil.

So...suggestions? Thoughts?

Thanks!

I thought my internet was fixed. But at 5:30 on the dot this afternoon, the connection died again - pretty much the exact same time it has died almost every day since December 30th.

So I contacted Xfinity again. The AI chat robot basically wasted my time, and then after it ended the chat I reopened it and got it to connect me to a live agent - or at least, what it *claimed* was a live agent.

They talked to me in a creepy way about how kind and nice and helpful I was, and how they wanted to make sure to put a smile on my face. They sent me a ♥️, which seemed even MORE creepy. Then they told me that the problem seemed to be with the network outside my home, somewhere - although when all this started they told me that their network was perfectly fine, and the problem had to be with my equipment. They said they'd send a technician to check the line from the pole to my house tomorrow morning. And then very suddenly they ended the chat.

I didn't know anything about the technician they were sending, so I asked in chat anyway. Apparently that counted as starting a new chat, and I was connected with a new "live agent". This person also started complimenting my kindness and helpfulness, and also told me they wanted to put a smile on my face. And used a ♥️.

They told me they couldn't send anyone to check the line to my home any sooner than Monday. I told them that I had just been told by the previous agent that a technician would be here tomorrow morning, and they gave me some double talk about the other person "must have been talking about robot tools to check the network".

I wasn't happy at all. They ended up giving me a $15 credit, which is pretty much a joke for 10 days of highly unreliable internet. But just to cap things off, they only gave me a $10 credit. I pointed out the difference, and they gave me a $5 credit on top of that.

So now I have to wait until Monday morning, and at this point I have absolutely no confidence that anything is going to be fixed then. But I have no alternative internet provider.

I swear, I'm incredibly tempted to try to start a municipal internet service at this point!

Meanwhile I have to constantly disconnect and reconnect the coaxial cable, which is pretty much destroying my fingers. And reboot the modem and router, over and over. I can't...I just CAN'T. There's nothing left to say.

Edited to add:
Thank YOU to everyone who responded in any way to his call to the Fediverse for greater knowledge about WiFi routers than I possess.
Finally settled on this 3-unit mesh router set from the Costco online store:
TP-Link Deco BE11000 Wi-Fi 7 Tri-Band Whole-Home Mesh Wi-Fi System, 3-pack.
I've been using an earlier version of this router and satellites with which I've been quite happy.
This new setup represents an upgrade to a higher "G" level.
The set I have now installed easily and quickly, and had an online app with numerous useful system tools and diagnostics. It worked flawlessly for years. I WAS hoping the Fediverse hive would come up with something off the beaten path that would work for me. And now I'm hoping that the new setup works as we'll as the old one.
Again, thanks to all.
We all know something.
Together we know everything.

Asking the Fediverse Hive Mind About WiFi routers:
I'm moving to a home where fibre high speed internet is available.
In order to avoid the monthly fee for the service provider's router, I'd like to provide my own.
Are there brands or models you kind folks would recommend?
I'm looking for something offering a good product at a reasonable price. (WiFi 7 seems worth getting.)
Dependable would also be nice.
Thanks to those who would be kind enough to boost.

Fedi/Bsky hivemind: Are there any privacy-friendly shared scheduling tools? We have a group of people who need to be able to schedule themselves on specific days and, ideally, times. We could use a shared text doc for this but I think it helps folks to see a calendar-type layout.

Hey, I have someone in my life who uses an iPhone and would benefit from a little bit of internet privacy help. Is there anything I can recommend them?

"Stop using iPhone/iOS" is not an option for them. Thanks in advance!

Hey #feditechsupport would it be possible/practical to purchase a cheap android tablet and, with the parental settings available by default, lock it down to only run one or two apps and no browser?

I could probably spend 5 minutes looking this up but search engines suck now.

Does anyone have a #Motorola #Iridium9505 (not #9505A / 9555 / 9575(A)(PTT)) charger / charging cradle / dock / serial adapter or can give me the #Pinouts for said #connector?

  • Kinda need to charge one, ideally without having to remove the battery (which is at least tool-free accessible!) and hooking it up to a benchtop power supply for CV/CC-charging...

Fedi hivemind, this is a request for tech recommendations.

I am managing a very small hyper-local not-for-profit and we need a way to send emails to people. We would like to offer people the opportunity to unsubscribe from the emails.

It needs to be privacy-friendly, but we have no budget. We are entirely dependent on small-dollar donations from the community and have no reliable source of income for the org. I'm not in a position to personally spend very much, if at all.

Right now the solution is "I manually send every email".

What services do you know about? Any that you use?

Boosts welcome, thanks in advance.

Hey lovelies 🩷

Question for any of y'all who have more knowledge than we do in relation to fixing networking issues within Windows 11 :Windows_11_Logo:

One PC on our network had been having intermittent networking issues on Windows 10, so we did an in-place upgrade to Windows 11 24H2.

This did fix some issues, but we're still having 2 major issues:

  1. The PC can see, but refuses to connect to, our Synology NAS (DS220J). It keeps asking for a username and password, like it's failing authentication.
  2. Other Windows-based PC can connect to it, and it can see them, but Kodi on a Fire TV stick (4K Max, 2024 model) refuses to connect to it over SMB (Samba), giving a "no route to host" error message.

We've reviewed guides such as:

... and made some settings tweaks. We've also gone through common troubleshooting tips such as:

  • Making sure the connection is private;
  • Making sure that filesharing is enabled;
  • Tweaking SMB connection settings in Synology NAS;
  • Deleting and manually re-entering the login details for the Synology NAS under the credentials manager;
  • Changing the minimum (no minimum, 1, 2) and and maximum (3) SMB level on Kodi;
  • Updating Windows and drivers;
  • Using DISM and SFC;
  • Group policy updates;

... but sadly to no avail.

We're trying to avoid a clean install, as there's a lot of stuff we'd need to reinstall, and we don't have the time, executive function, or (most importantly) and patience and emotional regulation to do that right now 🥺

Any thoughts?

Update, 2025-07-11:

With the help of suggestions from lovely folks, it looks tenuously like both issues have been resolved on the PC 🤞🩷

We didn't make it clear above, but both versions of Windows are the Pro versions. (Used a Home version of WIndows - XP Home - only once. Never again!!!)

In case it helps anyone else, here are the additional steps we took, based on comments, to resolve the issues described above:

  • Checked router (RX-AX88U) to check no DHCP issues.
    • Realised that the MAC address on the static IP address section for the PC was for the onboard NIC, rather than the PCI-E one we'd previously installed. This hadn't caused issues previously, but we did take the time to update this.
  • Reset the IP stack.
  • Uninstalled SMBv1 by removing from Windows Features.
  • Disabled SMB1 and verified that SMBv2/v3 enabled (per guide here).
  • Disabled SMB client signing requirement and enabled guest fallback protection (per guide here).
  • Deleted saved credentials for the Synology NAS again under Credential Manager
    • We'd done this previously, but it hadn't worked by itself.
    • Interestingly, when we deleted it once, it then reappeared, so we had to delete it twice.
  • Rebooted.

On the Fire TV Stick (4K Max, 2024), we'd also checked that the Kodi settings showed a minimum SMB protocol of V2.

Under the Synology NAS (a DS220J), we'd previously also gone into Control Panel > File Services > Advanced Settings > General and set:

  • Minimum SMB protocol to SMB2;
  • Transport encryption mode to Client defined;
  • Server signing status to Forced;

... per recommendations we'd read online.

Riddle me this #fediverse: It's a small tablet (8" or smaller) , it's supported by either #lineageOS or #GraphenOS and isn't total trash. What's the name I'm looking for?

I'll be lugging it around at a convention ( #38C3 ) instead of a laptop, which i never really used when I brought one. #feditechsupport

Things tech support and I have tried:
* updating MacFuse
* installing various older versions of the pCloud app
* disabling Gatekeeper altogether through the terminal (it is re-enabled now)

None of these have had any effect. Does anyone know any other ways to get that option to show up in System Preferences, or succesfully bypass it?

I like #pCloud, but without the ability to sync drives across all my machines, it is not a full Dropbox replacement for me.

#AskFedi #FediTechSupport I think I've reached the end of the road for pCloud's tech support with my ancient but still-essential macOS Mojave system, and the reason is I think this is a #MacOS problem rather than a pCloud problem.

To enable pCloud Drive, I have to follow the steps in the first screenshot, but I don't get shown the cited option to allow loading system software from developer PCLOUD LTD, not immediately, not after a restart, not ever.

System Extension Blocked

The system extension reauired for mounting pCloud volumes could not be loaded. Please open the Privacy & Security System Settings. and allow loading system software from developer "PCLOUD LTD" A restart might be required before the system extension can be loaded,

Then try mounting the volume again.

Hmmmm. Since a few updates ago (I think), I am getting hardly any notifications from K-9 Mail anymore, and have noticed several important email messages much later than I wanted to. I've checked my notification permissions for the app, and all notifications are allowed. I do not have DnD enabled.

What other settings should I be looking at to get my notifications back?

Help! I need some #FediTechSupport. An older couple I help is taking classes on consciousgirlfriendacademy.com The site pops up fine on L's computer but not on Kath's. WTF is happening?

An apt-cacher-ng host or some other APT proxy/mirror that sits on your corporate network and whose logs are chomped by a clever analyzer that feeds the information of which packages/versions have been downloaded by which clients into a database ... that has to have been invented in the last 20 years. Someone got a pointer for me?

Somewhat niche question.

Suppose I have SVG files, which include some text (labels, and such like). And I want to use those images in several reveal.js presentations using different themes, which means the presentations use different default fonts.

Do I have a way to ensure that the text in the SVG is rendered in the same font as the HTML it's embedded in? If so, how?

(Boosts appreciated. Helpful comments too, obviously. 🙂)
