Entirely serious pole time! I have a lot of work to do, so naturally my brain gets distracted with the questions that really matter.
Like is #coffee #tea or is it #soup? Time to ask the #fedivers for #fediadvice to solve this age old mystery!

Hi folks, Id love some advice:
My youngest brother is 10 years my junior at 25 and an army veteran. Both our parents were working long hours and away from home, my dad for about 40 weeks out of the year. I was parentified and my brother's caregiver until I moved away for college. For context, he currently lives rent free in my parents' basement as he saves for a home down payment.
When asked to join the #NoKings protest this Saturday, he said that we needed to respect his decision not to go. When questioned he doubled down. The ensuing conversation had a lot of deniability on his part around: the state of the nation, the importance of peaceful protest under the first amendment, and importance of showing solidarity for those not sheltered by privilege.
I don't want to give up on him. Any ideas or suggestions?
It's time to make the jump from Windows 10 to Linux (Mint).
Do I buy a slow 1TB SATA III SSD for my 10-year-old desktop for it?
Or should I buy a fast NVMe one + PCIe 2.0 adapter (No DXE = bootloader/UEFI hack)?
Or should I shill for a new machine with a powerful CPU, tons of memory, and blazing fast SSDs?
Hmmpf 🤔
Fediverse, I need your help. If I buy music on iTunes, I am then downloading it and own it, or is licensed and need always iTunes for listening?

Is there a way to see if a domain have been used in the Fediverse before? I have a domain I can't remember if I've used and want to use now. As I understand there might be problems federate if its been in use before.
Fedi advice needed: If you were to HAVE to recommend a website building platform for budget conscious, non-technical small business owners (ie. farmers), what would you recommend?
(I know the CORRECT answer is to hire a developer, BUT pretend that's not an option.)
Edited: The audience is budget conscious and websites are somewhat low on their priority list. Currently, they use FB to reach their audience. I'll be teaching the importance of owned channels.

OK, so dear #Fediadvice
It seems Mozilla are turning horrible with the TOU of #Firefox. We have #Librewolf as an alternative, so I'm looking at that.
But this is the same Mozilla that does #Thunderbird Mail. Are they going to change the rules there too? Email is, arguably, a LOT more sensitive than stuff I do in a browser.
What alternative would be good (on Linux) for IMAP mail if they do that?
Annnnd.... GO!
Did a brief walkthru of how to pull in a domain name into an Infomaniak mail service. They allow you to either transfer the domain you want from your other (external) registrar for about 11,32 Euros.
Going through the prompts of just assigning that domain name to my Infomaniak account (leaving the domain at Namecheap registratr) and it seems that things are about 26,36 Euros for a year's worth of email.
Im not too concerned about pricing, but just wondering if Im better off transferring the domain I want to use over to Infomaniak. They have website hosting too so, if ladyleopardess.com ever got a comeback, having the domain already at the Infomaniak's registrar could be convenient.

Havent committed on anything, so Im still overall open to suggestions for email services with decent privacy, and not hosted in the US, UK or any of the main countries.
Would love to hear some recommendations for a reliable #SSD for home Linux desktop (SATA III)? Need around 1 Tb for root and home partitions 🙏🏽
My Samsung 870 EVO seems to be dead and I'm not sure I want to buy another one of those (as I need one cause RMA will take time).
Hey Fedi,
I'm considering buying a pair of Demonia Swing boots (or some cheaper knock-off) in patent, but I would love to know if somebody has any experience in them, if the wedge is uncomfortable, durability...
I already own a pair of Trashvilles that have served well but after 6 years they're starting to rip and the patent is crumbling.
Can you or anybody you know give some advice? Thanks!
I want to create a new account, and would love to be able to bring along all the filters I have created. Is there a way of doing that?
I don't spend much time figuring out who to follow, so I don't care about that.
I have been putting off the decision to change my old (8 year old 🙈) #phone for as long as I could, but the moment has finally arrived. Thinking of a #fairphone5 as a replacement, happy to hear others' experiences, suggestions for equipment that will be *relatively* sustainable and ethical. #fediadvice
#fediadvice I need to get a new pair of over ear headphones so need some advice.
I currently have some Jane’s Elit 85h that are about 4 years old and I have been happy enough with them. They do have an issue connecting to more than one device though.
I was thinking perhaps the Apple ones would be good to try next. Any suggestions are welcome.
I want to add OpenGraph metadata with images to my blog so that when you link it, on social sites, you get a nice little preview panel. HOWEVER, I fear the “Mastodon effect” will either bring down my site or run up my bill. Are there specific things I can do with my site setup to minimize the “Mastodon effect”? I use Eleventy to generate a static site which is hosted on Netlify. I have a hunch Netlify can handle whatever I throw at it, but I fear getting a big surprise bill.
I need some career advice.
How does one deal with working at startup that isn’t going anywhere and/or is slowly sinking?
I’m coming up on my 5yr anniversary of my current job at a small startup which hasn’t gone anywhere. It’s been me doing everything tech and security related, the founder’s wife doing HR stuff, and the founder who considers himself a technical person but is at the level of a toddler.
Everything I’ve done in the past 5 yrs has the following caveats:
1) Business lost the one client, so the stuff I built was never used or scaled.
2) The founder never implemented my solutions because he was fine with the current systems, couldn’t figure them out even though I built example projects, or shoots the down becase we (me) can do security better then which has a team for that.
3) There are no budgets to do anything, so I’m stuck with 10 servers and few cloud VMs.
Thoughts on using IRC in 2024? I haven't been on since Freenode collapsed.... but I don't want to go back with weechat.
What would you use today? Self-hosted web client? bouncer?
I just connected via Konversation directly and it feels so wrong.
