huh. Turns out #FreeCAD does pretty* colors! And that's genuinely practical! I wonder what other hidden-in-plain-sight secrets it has. Maybe I ought to read the manual one of these days..

Here's a little #repair project I did with a secret goal of more #3dprinting material endurance testing.

Our dishwasher's cutlery basket broke. Over the time the plastic net developed holes big enough for the cutlery handles go through it. Before I threw the thing away, I decided to do a little experiment.

I took PETG, ABS and ASA and basically re-made the bottom part of the basket. My idea was to see how these materials would fare in the rather harsh environment of a dish washer, that runs up to 70°C temperatures during wash cycles. I did a quick and dirty #FreeCAD model of the base that went between the bottom and the divider parts, that fortunately separated without much resistance.

That was in winter of early 2025. I see no degradation in any of the used materials yet. In the picture there's ABS at top, ASA in the middle and PETG at bottom. The basket itself is made of ABS judging of the markings. I had assumed PETG would be the first to go, but that white cheap one I used seems just fine.

Just as my other still running test where I put Benchys made of various materials onto a board and left it on the roof, this was prompted by claims that 3D print's just won't last.

@Matthias Gefühlt gibt es jede Menge angefangene Projekte, die irgendwas besser machen und dann stecken bleiben. Beachtenswert finde ich: Solvespace sieht interessant aus, Blender hat CAD-Funktionalität. Aber an #FreeCAD kommt nichts ran.

@Matthias Warum ist das traurig? #FreeCad ist eine aktiv entwickelte Software, die für jeden Anwendungsfall etwas bietet. Ich verwende Freecad schon seit Jahren um #3DDruck Projekte zu realisieren. Die besten Erfahrungen habe ich mit der #PartDesign Workbench in FreeCad gemacht. Damit sind parametrische Konstruktionen gut umsetzbar.

Wenn man für den 3D-Druck selbst konstruieren möchte und nur zwei Kriterien ansetzt: Linux und keine fremde Cloud, also Lokal nutzbar oder/und eigene Cloud, wie z.B. Nextcloud - dann bleibt eigentlich nur FreeCAD übrig.
Das ist echt sehr traurig.

Little job this morning in the #Doghouse. This wall with old fireplace was hard to put a desk up too so I made a little desk, probably for electronics use. Lol this wood has been reused about 6 times as various desks/benches! #3Dprinted brackets super handy and of course designed in @FreeCAD #freecad #reuse

#freecad has definitely improved the UX since I last used it. Constraints now feel far more intuitive. Now to figure out keyboard shortcuts.

For this #FreeCADFriday I have made a replacement strap coiler for Selve roller shutters.

It replaces the yellowing (and in some cases jerky) old ones with a (in my opinion) more aesthetically pleasing housing while reusing the inner mechanics.

What's more, the design is parameterized, allowing you to enter a specific belt spool diameter. The size is adapted to the belt length while keeping the original mount hole distance (if desired).
