I'm processing all the photos/vids from yesterday now. Then going for a mental wellness walk in nearby forest. Napping after lunch. Visiting one client in afternoon. Getting back to personal communications when back from client appointment.

I have a couple of phone meetings today to discuss creating a #cultural #SeedLibrary (separate from the LifeCycles Victoria Seed Library project). The BIPOC specific seeds library would be only for food crop seeds from our far away homelands that aren't really grown or known about here. There's many of us POC who've been displaced from our homelands & far from our traditional food crops. There's a gap with seed libraries here - all the ones currently available are colonial & don't include many POC traditional food crop seeds. I want to work with local, #BIPOC #diaspora folks to create the first cultural seed library on #VancouverIsland. I met several fellow displaced POC war survivors yesterday & there's a lot of interest in this idea. I want to work on making it a reality. BIPOC #FoodSecurity initiative.

My ~2'x3' potato plot has provided!

Pretty good for just a few dead potatoes ๐Ÿ˜œ

(Those are walking onions left in there)

A mostly empty raised bed with a few green stalks at the very front (walking onions) and a lattice towards the back. All the wood is grey with age, and you can see grass, and wild strawberries, and creeping Charlie, and probably a few other things growing wild all around the box.A metal strainer/colander filled with baby/new potatoes. A pale hand is against the side to give an idea of scale. The whole thing is sitting on top of a white counter with a white painted concrete wall behind it
The largest potatoes are the length of my pointer finger, and the smallest about the size of the pad of my thumb. There are 50 or so total potatoes.

A view from the #garden. Everything is bursting with life at the moment. I suspect it's quite important to keep on top of it for the next few weeks, or I'll end up doing a lot of hand weeding and damage limitation.

Harvest of the day
First potatoes of the year (from my back garden and from a big pot) I probably could have waited a bit longer for them to be bigger (?) but I'm in need of a lunch ๐Ÿ˜„
The fragrance of these wild strawberries reminds me of childhood in the woods... ๐Ÿฅน๐Ÿ“๐Ÿ˜‹

The tomatoes are in the ground and the beans are sprouting! I removed the bottom branches of the tomatoes to plant them deep. I have been told this improves their tolerance to dry periods. #GrowingFood

The person we're chicken sitting for told us to help ourselves to the tomatoes she's growing, so I've been grabbing the ripe ones each day.

I'm going to have to grow tomatoes after winter, because these are amazing.

A bunch of tomatoes, different varieties. They're different shades of reds, they looks ripe and plump and yummy. There are two tiny capsicums as well.

@cobalt123 Oh yeah. Fungus can be an issue. In peanuts, it's aflatoxin. A good reminder to know what you're growing, and the risks of growing your own!

"Rigorous cleaning, shelling, sorting and blanching (removal of peanut skins) are key steps in identifying and eliminating damaged peanuts..."

When I was a teen, I earned money picking strawberries. The Marshall strawberries had such rich flavor and a beautiful soft texture. They didn't ship well so were used commercially for jam or were frozen. For reasons explained here, they disappeared for decades. Now they are available again through Territorial Seed Co. I bought one plant and will use it to propagate an entire strawberry bed by 2026

Another trick of mine is cut the top and microwave the gourd for 15 minutes and let it steam internally (so it doesn't explode), wait ten minutes while it cools and then go to town.

I really gotta write all this shit down some day.

Stupid fast tricks, seen to work.

Your milage may vary.

Spoon Test.
Get a spoon in there and start scooping. You should be able to rotate and just plop stuff out (I'm in a cooking mood today updating my book). You should have the skin, and a plop of really good gourd texture.

Olive oil, salt, cinnamon and/or nutmeg. That stays vegan. Add butter for more richness, not vegan.

There are three main considerations for how I choose what food to grow: what tastes better homegrown, what is much cheaper homegrown, and what I can't find at the grocery store. If it fits more of these categories, I am more motivated to grow it. Discard the things that need a different climate, are too much effort, or the rats devour before I get to them.

Planted Native Ginger in a couple of spots.
Repotted the Lemon Myrtle today too!

Plus, collected more Red Lettuce Seeds. Have a lifetime supply right here!

It's about time I started to learn to grow my own food. Starting small, and early with some crops that need to sprout in indoor conditions. Hope they'll do well!

#GoodNews - Several of my local small farm friends will benefit from this new program๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐ŸŒพ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐ŸŒพ

#CRD will sow the seeds of #FoodSecurity & #GrowingFood in the region as it embarks on a new #foodlands access service.

The goal is to enhance food security & address concerns over the rising cost of #farmland by facilitating affordable access to productive land for new & expanding #farmers.
