//
Otto I. (or, very humbly, Otto the Great), seen here as a #statue on #MagdeburgCathedral.
#Magdeburg gave itself the nickname "Ottostadt" (the City of Otto) to remember the great Emperor. Otto (912–973), King of East Frankia, founded the Holy Roman Empire in 962, unified the German kingdom through military victories and political reforms, and established a powerful church-based system of governance (yay us). He shaped Central Europe for centuries to come and was laid to rest in the predecessor of Magdeburg #Cathedral next to his first wife Eadgyth (who received Magdeburg as dower), after the city became one of his most powerful courts.
Another important Otto for Magdeburg is Otto von Guericke, 17th century scientist, inventor, physicist and mayor. But that's a story for another day.

A low-angle shot of a weathered stone statue of Otto the Great, the first Holy Roman Emperor, adorning the West Portal of Magdeburg Cathedral. The crowned and robed figure holds an orb in one hand and a staff or scepter in the other. The statue features elaborate, curly hair under its crown and stands on an ornate pedestal, set against the dark blue, decoratively carved wooden door and Gothic architectural elements of the cathedral facade.

I get really sick of hearing about OpenAI and the rest of the LLM crowd making absurd claims about LLMs like ChatGPT being AGI. LLMs are not even close to AGI. If you want to see real research into AGI, watch this video on Chris Eliasmith's Spaun (semantic pointer architecture unified network). It may not look as snazzy and consumer-ready as all these hallucinating LLMs being marketed to us, but this is the real deal: A single system that can do lots of different things the brain does and that LLMs can never do.

@root The closest technologies we have to how the human brain works are not LLMs, but some less well-known ones: reinforcement learning algorithms and hyperdimensional computing. If you want to see what HDC is capable of, check out this video:

Braun & Bechtold stress that diets were a diplomatic sphere sui generis, especially with regard to the ceremonial, that differed not only from courtly #diplomacy but also from #emdiplomcy at #peacecongresses, although both of course were points of references.
Furthermore, they ask for more comparative studies that compare the Imperial diet in its different forms as diplomatic spheres and places of international interaction with other assemblies of the estates, such as the Swiss Tagsatzung or the Polish Sjem.
Only the, can we understand the characteristics of #emdiplomacy at assemblies of the estates. (7/7)

Because of ceremonial difficulties for foreign diplomats and other points of conflicts Braun stress that the perpetual diet could not fully develop its supranational dimension despite Regensburg being an important international meeting point. (6/7)

Bechtold and Braun describe the Imperial diets as a “dual sphere of non-permanent multilateral diplomatic interaction”, meaning on the one hand they where a place for internal diplomatic interaction between the members of the #HRE. On the other hand, the diets were news hubs and attracted the attention of foreign powers who sent their diplomats to the diet in order to gather news and advance their own interests.
Moreover, especially in the 17th and 18th c foreign powers held territories within the #HRE making their diplomats not only visitors to the diet but members. E.g. Sweden held several votes in the college of princes. (5/7)

When talking about Imperial diets as diplomatic spheres we have to differentiate between the non-permanent diets of the 16th c that were summoned by the Emperor and could last several months on the one hand and the perpetual diet that met permanently in Regensburg since 1663 on the other hand. Bechtold is writing his PhD thesis on English diplomats at Imperial diets in the 16th cent. Braun is professor for modern history in Mulhouse. He published extensively on #emdiplomacy and #peacemaking. He also edited a volume of the French correspondences from the #WestphalianPeaceCongress for the APW. More recently, his attention turned from #earlymodern #peacecongresses to the perpetual Imperial diet.

So, who could be better than these two to write the #handbook article on diets al diplomatic spheres! (3/7)

From #peacecongresses we move on to assemblies of the estates as diplomatic spheres. For this we were able to pair up to scholars with different expertises: Jonas Bechtold from Bonn university and Guido Braun from the university of Mulhouse! (2/7)

What is interesting about his career, is that he served both the Emperor and the elector of Mayence at different times. It was his experience in Imperial affairs, which he had acquired not least at the #PeaceCongressOfWestphalia, that made him especially valuable as an #emdiplomat. In fact, at the Reichsdeputationstag he met other diplomats who had also been in Westphalia. The issue of community-building between #emdiplomats, especially between those within the #HRR is another topic that needs more research.

If you want to learn more not only about Cratz von Scharffenstein, but about #emdiplomacy within the #HRR we can recommend the #handbook article by our editor @dorotheegoetze: (3/3)
