That awkward feeling when you walk three kilometres from Travemünde ferry port to Lübeck-Travemünde Skandinavienkai train station to see the ferry you got out of like a hour ago just behind the bushes less than 500 metres away.

The panoramic path was beautiful, but it's gravel coverage was impossible for wheeled luggage.

Tomodashi's (@vga256) design philosophy so much resonates with my own, even if my reality/interests and having roots in different social & technological environments/communities sometimes still causes friction/confusion/dilution of principles — it's all a process, an ongoing dismantling & rebuilding, and the path has become more clear over the past 5-10 years... thi.ng plays a major part (and stepping stones) for me in that context and very much shares the same principles laid out further below.

tomodashi.com/philosophy

"The sub-Arctic regions of the Canadian Northwest Territories have many communities of fishers, hunters and trappers who live off the land with simple and effective tools. When technology breaks down in the north, there isn't a tech support number to call, or dealership or mechanic to take it to. You're on your own.

This encourages you to care for your tools, and make repairs using whatever knowledge and resources you have on hand. People who live on the land only take with them what they can maintain, upgrade and repair themselves. Big, complex, fragile, expensive, high-performance, high-maintenance stuff is left at drydock.

The elders of the far north teach us that these human-sized and human-shaped tools are extensions of who we are. To care for one's tools is to care for one's community, and oneself. These are not separate things.

That is the key to the Tomodashi design philosophy.

Principles

All Tomodashi software is crafted with these four related ideas in mind:

1. Human-sized things are friendlier, more economical, and easier to learn.
2. The user is both a creator of things and a playful being.
3. Let people personalize, modify, and repair their toys and tools.
4. Imperfect creations feel more human, serene and beautiful.

When human qualities and self-expression become the focus of software engineering - whether it's a game or a programming tool or an IDE - all other arguments about programming and software design become moot"

Begging the questions: what are the limitations of #HumanCentredDesign, and how do we move to a #PlanetCentredDesign approach – without forgetting the needs of the user?

Anybody else out there using #Linux as their everyday driver for #UX and #UXresearch work? Having just got a 'new' (refurbished Dell) laptop I've installed #Ubuntu - which I've been using for years for home use. But with more or less *everything* now cloud-based or available on linux (e.g. Figma) I can't really see any reason why not? Most of my colleagues are on Macs, so it's always cross-platform anyhow.
Are there any key 'killer' applications (it used to be the Adobe suite, but I haven't used that in years) that you can't run in linux? Thoughts?

(And before you ask - yes, I've used and very much appreciated, Linux Mint, Elementary OS, and other distros. I think they're all great.)

Back in 2019, we joined Cookpad at their global headquarters in Bristol to work for three months with their product squads and designers, bringing #humancentreddesign and #innovation to the heart of product discovery.

PLEASE WAIT FOR ASSISTANCE! Prof. Enrique Dans says that self-service checkouts are a **failure** (and he should know).

I STRONGLY agree with the learned Prof. I *hate* the wretched things and always go to a checkout with a real person when I can. Something *always* goes wrong with the self-service tills and then you have to call a real person for help, anyway. Doh!

@Old_IT_geek @wakehamAMR The system is DESIGNED to be punitive, rather than helpful. So many barriers are placed in the way of those who would seek help that they often give up even *trying* to access the services that they are entitled to.

Can we work towards a more sustainable web? As UX designers, developers, product owners, can we lessen our impact on our fragile planet? The** W3C Sustainable Web Design Community Group** thinks we that can and has put together a draft set of guidelines to help us do so.

Working with people for whom English is a second language? Some great tips here. I know I'm often guilty of (a) talking way too fast, and (b) in a very strong accent that only people from Norn Iron* can understand.

*For native English speakers, speaking English at work is a privilege. Your international colleagues have done a LOT of hard work to learn English, often to have better career opportunities at global companies. What they have done is extremely difficult and commendable.*

Looking for advice...

🙅🏻‍♀️ When you have stakeholders who don't understand design thinking, how do you approach that?

🤝 How do you help them understand the value of human-centered design?

💬 What methods do you use to influence people so they appreciate the process and allow time for it?

It's a battle I've fought in every organisation. It's important but tiring. Of course there's no magic solution but other perspectives are much appreciated!

Howdy everyone, I'm Cody. I thought I better make an #introduction!

Into anything cycling related including #gravelbiking, #mountainbiking, #commuting. Lately also #publictransit and #cityplanning.

Also interested in a mishmash of other things including #photography, #design, #machinelearning, #podcasts, and #astronomy.

I work as a UX/UI designer, so I'm always keen to discuss #UX and other #humancentreddesign related topics!

Glad to meet y'all! :fedi:

Tire, a creator who makes content online, expresses frustration towards common marketing strategies that prioritise short-term metrics like clicks and subscriptions over genuine user experience and long-term customer loyalty. He criticises the use of intrusive pop-ups and other aggressive tactics that disrupt the browsing experience, arguing that they may increase certain performance indicators but ultimately degrade trust and satisfaction among users.

He points out that these tactics, often justified by marketers with the phrase “but it works,” fail to consider the user’s feelings or foster any real engagement or sales. Instead, they focus on superficial gains such as gathering email addresses or short-lived interactions, which do not translate into meaningful or lasting relationships with customers. Tire illustrates this with personal experiences of being bombarded with unwanted subscriptions and manipulative marketing after purchasing items from online platforms like Cogan, which has led him to stop buying from them altogether.

Tire urges businesses to consider the long-term impact of their marketing strategies and to focus on building trust and providing value to customers rather than relying on deceptive or forceful tactics. He emphasises that genuine interest and readiness to purchase, shown by actions like requesting a quote or adding items to a cart, are the true indicators of potential sales, not just the accumulation of email addresses or clicks.

He also criticises inbound marketing agencies that promote these aggressive tactics, accusing them of selling overpriced and complicated services that do not necessarily result in actual sales or customer loyalty. Instead, they leave businesses with nothing more than lists of uninterested contacts and a false sense of success.

In conclusion, Tire advocates for a more honest and customer-focused approach to digital marketing, encouraging businesses to play the “long game” by building relationships based on trust and mutual benefit rather than exploiting quick and easy tricks that might seem effective in the short term but ultimately lead to dissatisfaction and disengagement. He invites anyone interested in improving their digital strategies to reach out to him for advice and support.
