Auf einer Waldlichtung baut eine Wespe ihr wabenförmiges Nest. Es ist am Boden zwischen Gräsern, Nadeln und kleinen weiß blühenden Bodendeckern kaum sichtbar. Die Haus-Feldwespe (Polistes dominula) hat ihr pergamentartiges Nest der Umgebungsfarbe angepasst: es ist mehr braun als grau. Ort: Bergisches Land bei Köln. 🇬🇧 A wasp is building its honeycomb-shaped nest in a forest clearing. It is barely visible on the ground between grasses, needles and small white soil covering flowers. The house field wasp (Polistes dominula) has adapted its parchment-like nest to the surrounding colour, therefore it is more brown than grey. Location: Bergisches Land near Cologne/Germany.

Eine kleine Motte sitzt mit ausgebreiteten Flügeln an einem Insektengitter. Das Insekt ist fast vollständig dunkelbraun. Auf den Vorderflügeln befindet sich jeweils ein gelber Fleck. Die hinteren Flügel sind an der Innenseite großflächig gelb gefärbt. Die Beine sind hell. Am hinteren Körperende befindet sich ein auffälliger Puschel.

Another new species in my garden!

🦋 Horace's Duskywing caterpillars feed on Goldenrod, which I have. But there are other #Nativeplants that I should find nearby or grow to support a population: Dogbane, Buttonbush, Sneezeweed, and Boneset. A few of these are hosts to other Butterflies.

🥳 This is shaping up to be a banner year for my #BiodiversityGardening. The effort is turning out to be worth it!

Butterfly on flower with bright red petals and bright yellow reproductive structures. The butterfly, in contrast, is dull brown with some even darker brown areas. The forewings do have some small pale orange and ivory spots. And there is a fringed edge to all the wings. The body is similarly brown but furry.

Ein Falter sitzt mit halb aufgeklappten Flügeln auf einem mit Terrakottafliesen belegten Boden und saugt Feuchtigkeit aus einer Rille. Der Betrachter sieht ihn von schräg hinten. Die Flügeloberseite ist rot-braun gefärbt. Die Spitzen der Vorderflügel sind schwarz, zeigen aber einen unregelmäßigen Fleck in rot-braun. Die Unterseite der Flügel ist unauffällig braun.
