Who knew sea slugs produced ink?!
Lifeless rock pools at Sawtell
After cyclone Alfred whipped up a 'bacteria smoothy' along Australia's east coast the sea foam then merged with a 'flush' from the suburbs. Dislodged smelly sponges at Sawtell beach made breathing and contact impossible. Even without fossil fueled disasters the intertidal zone at the north end of the beach is barren. The rock pools and crevices no longer house sea anemones, crabs, black nerites, limpets, sea stars, mulberry oyster borers, algae, sea anemones, sponges, tube worms, sea stars, oysters, and fish.
Still good enough for hosting 'sports' and advertising events amplified by megaphone so they can be heard at Lord Howe Island too.

The aggregating anemone (#AnthopleuraElegantissima), or clonal anemone, is the most abundant #species of #seaAnemone found on rocky, tide swept shores along the Pacific coast of North America. This #cnidarian hosts #endosymbiotic #algae called #zooxanthellae that contribute substantially to #primaryProductivity in the #intertidalZone. The aggregating anemone has become a model organism for the study of temperate cnidarian-algal symbioses.

"Looking like exotic fruits, these homes for small marine creatures hang in the intertidal zone."
Dear Friends,
They are #exploring the #IntertidalZone at low tide in Lloyd Neck on #LongIslandSound. Photographed in January, 2023.
ESM
Purple Shore Crab (Hemigrapsus nudus), and a bit of Shakespeare.
These little guys are everywhere on the shores of the Salish Sea, scurrying under rocks or raising their tiny claws at you, offering a fight.
I used five different reference photos (and video stills), to cobble together a leg and claw arrangement I liked. Its facial expression turned out a little more pouty than grumpy, but that's okay; I think it still works.
Soon to be for sale in the shop at the Seattle Art Museum. For information on purchasing shells, see my website: https://kitozbooks.com/product/painted-oyster-shells/

I can't decide if this painted shell turned out interesting, or a dismal disappointment. It's supposed to be a tide pool with anemones, urchins, starfish, and barnacles, but... I was too excited by the subject matter of "tide pool" (I love tide pools), and didn't give enough thought to design.
Next time, I'll focus on just one creature and perhaps some bladderwrack.
I find that when a painting has gone wrong, it almost always went wrong in the initial design phase. I'm always sorry when I "wing it" instead of thoroughly working through questions on an initial sketch. I sometimes wish I could be more free-flowing in my approach, but, well, that's just not who I am.
