Das Bild zeigt eine schmale Wasserstraße in Hamburg, eingefasst von hohen, roten Backsteingebäuden auf beiden Seiten. Die Gebäude wirken alt und massiv, mit vielen Fenstern, kleinen Balkonen und grünlich gefärbten Dachspitzen. Sie stehen dicht nebeneinander und bilden eine enge Schlucht aus Architektur.

In der Mitte verläuft ein Kanal, dessen Wasserstand sehr niedrig ist. Große Teile des Kanalbodens liegen frei und bestehen aus dunklem, schlammigem Untergrund. In den Vertiefungen haben sich Pfützen gebildet, die den Himmel und Teile der Gebäude spiegeln.

Im Hintergrund überspannt eine Brücke den Kanal und verbindet die beiden Seiten. Darüber ist ein klarer Himmel in hellen Blau- und Gelbtönen zu sehen, was auf frühes Morgen- oder spätes Nachmittagslicht hindeutet. Das Licht fällt schräg auf die Fassaden und erzeugt warme Reflexionen auf dem Wasser und den nassen Flächen.

Die Stimmung des Bildes ist ruhig, kühl und leicht melancholisch. Unten rechts ist eine kleine Signatur mit dem Text „by Duke“ zu erkennen.

Winter brings "king tides" to Southern California, with exceptionally low (negative) tides that allow access to a few areas along the coast that are otherwise only accessible from the ocean. One still has to pay attention to the tides though!

This is one of the narrow sea caves south of La Jolla shores and yes, the colors really are quite strange... :)
