We pushed the first post-#TeXlive 2025 update. Apart from a few pending patches, we spend some time on what we call retrotex and retropost.

Standard interchange image format for Open Source DTP

Hi people,

with all the mayor GUI #DTP software reaching their peak: #GIMP, #Scribus and #Inkscape; and the well established #TeX software #ConTeXt and #SpeedataPublisher, and #ImageMagick we need a serious discussion about which image format we should adopt that works seamlessly across all these applications and it is generally accepted in the press workflow, whereas is embedded or not into a PDF file.

It should be something that has good quality, supports #CMYK and Alpha channels and it is #opensource friendly and perhaps an #openstandard.

I would dare to say that perhaps jpeg2000 matches most of them, it exists from a very long time and can be adopted as common ground, however it is need a combined effort, if what I am writing makes sense for you.

ImageMagick supports it, Gimp 3 currently doesn't, #LuaTeX and #LuaMetaTeX neither. I guess that Inkscape once it will be able to export in CMYK it will decide which format using to store images in CMYK with alpha into a PDF.

It would be very beneficial if we can adopt a format that works everywhere and it is press friendly, thanks.

@saxnot As to microtype, it’s the other way around: support for is more limited than for (although differences are minimal).

News about #LaTeX from Joseph Wright: #LuaTeX is the recommended system, and #XeTeX is not recommended. #pdfTeX is still supported, but it is better to start new projects with luaTeX. Full news in the link below. #TexLaTeX

I’m in the process of revising the babel manual. In version 24.11 many outdated comments have been revised or directly deleted, sections restructured, and certain explanations expanded. Additionally, a greater number of examples have been included. Suggestions and requests are welcome.

@exa I don’t think she refers to , but babel (, ) does support CJK, Arabic, Hindi... Actually, about 300 languages, with several levels of coverage.

Fiddling around with the ecosystem around , and and honestly it‘s more and more cool over time how we have this whole ecosystem where programming, design, documentation and visualization can intertwine. It‘s not always perfect obviously, you have your jank and everything. And some aspects invite high-cloud dreaming. But it‘s in many respects awesome how much is just… well, just possible. It‘s really exciting to see.

Gavin about #documentation for #MetaPost:

I am working with #MetaPost in #ConTeXt. Here are the resources I use, roughly in the order I search when trying to solve a problem.

#MetaFun Manual (pragma-ade.nl/general/manuals/) This is most comprehensive and helpful source.
➤ MetaPost Manual (mirrors.ctan.org/systems/doc/m) This is not specific to ConTeXt, but it is very useful.
➤ The MetaFun page on the ConTeXt wiki (wiki.contextgarden.net/Graphic)

@esther@strangeobject.space If lualatex is an option, with babel you can get proper hyphenation even without explicit markup:

\documentclass{article}

\usepackage[greek, english]{babel}
\babelprovide[onchar=ids fonts]{greek}
\babelfont{rm}{NewComputerModern10}

\begin{document}

English Ελληνικά English

\end{document}
