Does anyone know of a 2½" SATA enclosure for NVMe M.2 drives? I need a new SSD for an old laptop that doesn't have an M.2 slot and I'd rather not buy a SATA drive since I hope to keep using this drive in other machine(s) long after that laptop is gone.

I understand that it's much easier to convert PCIe to SATA than the other way around, but I've seen some unlikely adapters in the past, so I still have hope.

Yeah girl, this is IT! My primary #NVMe is now in a front loaded tray. I can take #Windows out, and put #Linux in.

This PC has never seen native Linux before...but it will soon!!

Any thoughts on #ZFS as the filesystem for a #Kubernetes node? My very unscientific initial sandbox impression is that it really squeezes the maximum performance out of the #Hetzner auction servers, which usually features a lot of slow rotating storage with a couple of #NVMe sticks thrown in to sweeten the deal. When the latter are used for caching, the throughput seems almost bearable. I'll do some more practical testing over the next weeks, but I'm quite optimistic. Maybe this will solve the disk saturation issues we're seeing, without breaking the budget.

@fgaz @nina_kali_nina @spacehobo granted I am aware of CFexpress and whilst #PCIe / #NVMe provides excellent performance, I'm confident it would be best to offer a "Quad-Mode" storage solution that offers #USB, #SD, #SATA & #PCIe to serve all the needs from low-power SBCs to bootable drives to high-performance storage.

The idea is closer to making a universal yet affordable standard for removeable media.

@zekjur I've never been a fan of putting the OS on a fixed disk (e.g., NVMe). Too much hassle when it's time to rebuild the OS. I do use NVMe disks on Pi5s as data disks, and they are amazingly fast. I put the OS on SATA SSDs, which are plenty fast for my use.

It's time to move on from testing operating systems in #VMWare and #VirtualBox. I got this setup to make my #NVMe system drive easily swappable. So I'll be able to have a native #Linux install that can't touch #Windows, and vice-versa.

(I'm very VERY funny about multiple OSes touching each other's drives and fking things up, so I've always done this by physically swapping drives). Never done this with NVMe before though.

Two related but distinct pieces of computer hardware designed to adapt M.2 NVMe solid-state drives (SSDs) for use in different physical connections and form factors, typically found in workstations or servers.

This enclosure allows you to install a bare M.2 NVMe SSD inside it, effectively converting the small M.2 drive into a hot-swappable drive.

Host Connector: The connector visible at the back is a U.2 (SFF-8639) port. This single port provides both power and a direct PCI Express (PCIe) data connection to the motherboard or a host bus adapter, allowing the M.2 drive to operate at its full NVMe speed.

M.2 NVMe to U.2 Adapter Cable - this cable is an adapter that allows you to connect a U.2 device to an M.2 NVMe port on a motherboard.

The enclosure is ideal for making the drive hot-swappable and easily accessible from the front of a computer, perfect for servers where drives may need to be replaced without downtime.
