Wanted some more SATA ports for the server, so grabbed this PCIe expansion card to add 4 more

So I have this #USB #SATA controller from #asmedia . I want to flip some bits in the #firmware for great good. But when I do, the flashing utility fails.

Does anyone have a clue how they might checksum their firmware?

It uses the ASM1053E chip.

I’ll need to connect 6 SATA drives to the motherboard with 4 SATA ports and a power supply with 3 SATA power connectors )))

There are no issues with power, because I just need to use Molex-to-SATA power adapters.

It is more complicated with data ports. I’ll need an HBA SAS controller for everything to work properly without writing my own drivers ))

Here are some useful links fromthe TrueNAS forum about it:

Since I started to use the #debian kernel instead of an #armbian legacy kernel on my #RockPro64 I had a few crashes. Most of them seemed to have been related to #sata, because they stopped after I exchanged the sata pcie with another one of the same type.

I had another #oops afterwards and decided I should look for a #watchdog to reboot the system in case of trouble.

After reading a bit about watchdogd the most simple solution I found is:

root@TEST:~# cat /etc/cron.d/watchdog
@reboot   root wdctl -s 180
* * * * * root echo "1" > /dev/watchdog

I'm testing it on a non-productive board and it seems to be good. It works for a forced oops echo c > /dev/sysrq-trigger and if I stop cron.

But it doesn't work in the state after a simple halt: the system tries to start and hangs after showing the first line of u-boot output.

followup to this #XPS 13 issue: user error!

I installed an M2 2280 #nvme disk in an M2 2280 #SATA slot. what was especially perplexing was it was usable post-boot just fine? could install operating systems, read, write, etc

replaced with the correct drive type and now it boots fine #solved

Follow-up to this note:

At one of the times the current #Armbian #linux kernel didn't crash, but booted on my #RockPro64 I installed #GotoSocial and yes: no more strange error messages running it. The only time I remember that I updated a linux kernel to make an application work.

Preparations to get the production system running with the newer kernel:

  • in case of problems I'd need to know my way back to boot the old kernel: u-boot recap and learning
  • test suspected problems with the #sata #pcie ctrl beforehand (get a second Pine64 sata ctrl for the test system)

Meanwhile Dragan had patched the device tree and asked to check on a few reboots whether this would make a difference or cause any regressions.

I've never been fond of #JMicron #USB bridges! #SATA or #NVMe! (#ASMedia ain't much better?)

It's just a pain in the rear to pull #SMART reports off the drive!

NO, i friggen DO NOT WANT TO fumble around with "-d", and quirks, and shiz!

Tools on friggen #Windows (#CrystalDiskInfo) CAN DO it, so SHOULD smartmontools on #Linux, automatically!

(back in the 480mbps USB 2.0 days - things were BETTER - current #Linux code hasn't caught up)

…or is it #Firmware?

#Linux #smartctl #smartmontools

My Ventoy/Medicat SSD is an NVME, via a JMicron bridge - i CAN'T pull a SMART report, without wasting half a day reading manuals …and then likely still failing - not sure how ASMedia fares, but i despise JMicron in particular, notoriously

Its alive!!!
My 2TB portable #HDD that died earlier this week has now been repaired (by myself 😃 ).
The internal #SATA to #USB3 interface went ping.
I got a new, not like for like, replacement and with the help of a hacksaw, some snips and electrical tape it had been brought back to life.
The new SATA interface is a generic one that should work with any 2.5 internal HDD so I needed to cut a bit off the original portable HHD case.
Nice fix which only cost me £3.99 GBP and 15 minutes of my time.

Portable 2TB HDD with new SATA to USB 3 fitted.
The old broken interface and cable is sitting beside it to show the difference in size difference. The original interfaces about one quarter of the size of the original.
I have labelled the drive to remind me when I did the repair for future reference.
It says

USB 3

Here's an odd question. Is it possible to daisy chain hard drives? Like, can I use one SATA port with a ribbon that has connectors for two hard drives. I think this was possible on my old IDE computer, but no idea with modern hardware.

I want to dual boot, and all the suggestions are a drive for each OS, but my laptop has very little physical space and all of the SATA ports are filled. That said, I might be able to shove a small M.2 SATA drive in there. I asked on the hardware company's forum and they were less than helpful.

Oooft 2nd elderly hardware failure in week.

14 year old NAS died last week and now an 8 year old 2TB portable HDD has failed on me.

I cracked open the case and it would seem that it is the small #SATA to USB 3 board that has failed.
Using my SATA/IDE to USB cables I bought many moons again I can read the HDD and see that the drive is actually fine.

I have ordered a SATA to USB 3 connector. So the drive may have a bit of life left in it.

Interface board from inside a 2TB portable hard drive.
On one side of the board is a female USB 3 connector and on the other side is SATA power and data connectors. This is the component that has failed in the unit.A 2TB 2.5 inch internal Hard Drive.
There are 3 cables visible. Only two are plugged in - the SATA power and data connectors. The other unplugged cable is an IDE power cable which is only used on that type of drive.
