Silly thought, I wonder how hard it is for a fast MCU or FPGA to emulate a SATA III disk interface?
If you could make a mSATA or M.2 SATA module (which are getting rare and expensive) which took a stack of lower-density MMC cards or eMMC chips and put them in a RAID-5 style arrangement… you could re-use existing flash media stock, possibly even replace faulty parts as they wear out.

Поменял в сервере китайский PCE8SAT-M01 на Broadcom 9600-24i.
Теперь один контроллер обслуживает весь бэкплейн и вся морда сервера функциональна.
Пока это делал - всё пошло не по плану. И PiKVM сломался при недавнем обновлении и перестал стримить картинку, и я забыл, что не включил в ядре модуль mpi3mr.
Потратил несколько часов на расследование несуществующей проблемы.
Но в итоге разобрался: сервер загружен, рейды поднялись.
Как будто теперь сервер менее кустарный.

Damn, the brand new drive started clicking too, so the root issue didn't come from the actual drive (doesn't mean the initially replaced drive isn't fried)
Tried changing the sata port, then the sata cable, and still clicking, so I am now leaning towards the molex to sata cable... I knew that jank would eventually catch up, but didn't expect it NOW

The last piece of DIY NAS rebuild arrived. I hope this little guy will work properly, it's a shame it's currently almost impossible to find a motherboard with more than 4 SATA ports. And I don't want to occupy the only PCIE slot on the mITX board with separate SAS/SATA card. At least the motherboard in question had two M.2 slots, so I still can boot from fast NVMe drive and have 9 SATA ports in total 😍

#WindowsXP kann (ohne modifizierte Installationsmedien) weder #SCSI noch #SATA geschweige denn #SAS oder #NVMe-Medien nativ booten und erkennen und verlangt zwingend die #Treiber auf 3,5" #Diskette (!!!)
Das Problem besteht bis einschließlich #Windows7 fort, samt Unfähigkeit ohne Spezialsoftware von #USB-Speichersticks & -Festplatten wie SSDs zu installieren.
#Windows8 & #Windows 8.1 hat immerhin #SATA-Triber bekommen und
Erst ab #Windows10 gab's #NVMe-Support ohne Frickelei.
Von der Fummelei keinen #MicroShit-Accoint für #Windows11 zu brauchen und zu verhindern dass jenes #Govware-OS konstant alle Dateien in #OneDrive hochlädt noch garnicht angefangen.
Dass fundamentale #Treiber bis heute nicht in #Windows integriert sind und wie in den 1990ern #Treiber händlisch reingeprügelt werden müssen ist auch ein Unding dass es so glücklicherweise nie unter #Linux gab.
- Klar Murks alla #nvidia und einige beschissene Geräte sind immernoch beschissen, aber so #Bloatware wie #GeForceExperience gibt's aus guten Gründen nicht…
Meine Beispiele bei Windows sind noch nichtmals weirde Edge-Cases sondern fundamentale Funktionen…
- #Linux mag zwar in seltensten Fällen auf Konsole crashen, aber es kann von dort wenigstens repariert oder sogar benutzt werden!
Took a little while, but my "obsolete" 14yo #MacMini is now running #Linux #Ubuntu Server! #Shinobi is installed as a standalone and #Jellyfin in a #Docker container. Once my 1st #RTSP cam arrives I'll add it and start experimenting, but for the time being everything seems to be working well thru the web UIs.
I also ordered a small SSD for my #RaspberryPi where #HomeAssistant is running, and a larger #SATA drive for #Shinobi, as well as a #UPS.
Still need to fix some #HA integrations 🙃
