Tiny Guardians of the Garden: 22-Spot Ladybirds in Arboretum Kalmthout

During a delightful visit to Arboretum Kalmthout with my son, an aspiring botanist, and a close friend I've mentored in photography, we encountered the charming 22-spot ladybird (Psyllobora vigintiduopunctata), known in Dutch as the "citroenlieveheersbeestje." These petite beetles, measuring just 3–5 mm, are easily recognized by their bright yellow elytra adorned with 22 distinct black spots.

Unlike their aphid-eating relatives, these ladybirds have a unique diet: they feed on powdery mildew fungi, making them valuable allies in maintaining plant health.

Capturing them with my Canon 5D Mark III and the Canon MP-E 65mm 5x macro lens was a rewarding challenge. This lens lacks a focus ring, requiring me to adjust focus by moving the camera—and myself—closer or farther from the subject. With the ladybirds and their perch swaying in the breeze, patience and steady hands were essential.

I prefer to embrace these natural challenges rather than manipulate the scene. The result: two images—one at maximum zoom out and another at maximum zoom in—highlighting the intricate details of these beneficial insects.

Ladybirds !
When is too much of a Good Thing ... too much.

Apparently this is not unheard of and in this instance is caused by the (deep and long) local drought stressing the local pine plantations.

Yeah it is DRY here in the Hills too.

In the vegetable garden, ladybirds are the ultimate cattle herders—shepherding aphids just like ranchers with livestock. These tiny beetles feast on aphids, keeping our crops safe from damage. With each ladybird devouring up to 50 aphids a day, they act as natural defenders of our greens, reducing the need for pesticides. So, if you spot a ladybird in your garden, let them stay—they’re working hard to protect your veggies! 🐞🌱 #GardeningTips #NaturalPestControl #OrganicGardening

I just picked off a big juicy one from one of my tomato plants, then moved it to the driveway, where a sparrow swooped down and made off with it for dinner!

Something is removing the aphids from my milkweed plants - Thank you!
Is it these guys? And if so, anyone know who/what they are?

photo of an insect (long, narrow, rather flat, with alternating black and orange coloration) on a butterfly flower (aesclepius - a member of the milkweed family) plant in my garden. (I had an aphid infestation problem, which is diminishing. i suspect these insects get the credit, but don't really know.)

#LadybugLarvae & #Ladybug butt.

There were tons of ladybug #larvae crawling all over this #aphids infested plum tree. I only saw one mature ladybug but am sure there's more on the tree that I didn't see. They have a huge aphids buffet to feed on.

@Trilobyter As gross as it sounds, I've dealt with both by gently squishing the #aphids, and not so gently squishing the #beetles. Not sure what you could use on them that wouldn't affect the #monarchs. Do other folks have ideas?

I just had a little geek out because there are SO many dragonflies zooming around my yard right now feasting on mosquitos! I'm so grateful to them for their service.

I haven't got round to taking out the box moth defoliated box ball, but noticed it was covered in box moth caterpillars again. A little group of sparrows are valiently tucking in to the pesky critters. Perhaps at last we have a natural predator for this invasive species. The blue tits won't touch them because the webbing the caterpillars produce messes up their beaks.

How to Get Rid of #FruitFlies — without #Pesticides

Fruit flies are a common kitchen pest.

by Becky Krystal

"There’s no need to pull out the #insecticide, DeVries says. That’s something you want to avoid in the kitchen, where you are preparing food. It’s also totally unnecessary and won’t solve the problem in the long term. If you want to eliminate the bugs you see flying, DeVries recommends an old-fashioned fly swatter or a vacuum cleaner, which you can empty outside.

"You can also trap them. Dellinger says there are commercial traps out there, but you can make one with materials you likely have on hand. Fill a small jar or container with half an inch of fruit juice, vinegar, apple cider or wine, and add a couple of drops of dishwashing detergent. Cover with plastic wrap and then punch a few holes in the wrap. The flies will be attracted by the bait, but won’t be able to escape because the soap breaks the surface tension of the water, trapping the flies. Another model involves a similar strategy of a bait and soap, but you construct it by cutting a bottle (soda, water, etc.) in half and then inverting the top half and setting it into the bottom to create a funnel, DeVries says."

I've used a combination of neem oil and pine-cedar mulch (specifically, a bit of used cedar-pine cat litter without poops) successfully in deterring chipmunks.

Exploring The Use Of Neem Oil For Deterring Chipmunks

"Oils such as Peppermint, castor oil, Eucalyptus, cinnamon, citrus, vinegar, garlic, ammonia, urine, liquid fence repellent, spearmint, cayenne pepper, bleach, blood meal, and others are not welcome by the chipmunks. Some products are eco-friendly, while others are effective. Using the following suggested smells will be the most humane option. chipmunks frequently destroy anything they can get their hands on, such as gardens and yards. Insect repellents based on chemical compounds are typically not beneficial to nature. To save the yard, use the ingredients listed below to get rid of chipmunks. Cedar mulch, apple cider vinegar, deer repellent, and Irish Spring soap are just a few examples."

"My flytraps bring all the frogs to the yard, and they're like, 'Its better than yours...'"

Summer time backyard fun for us all. So glad we grew lawn again so these little friends can stop by often. When we bought the house, it had a pond in the middle of the hill, but it had a heinous leak, which was making the hill unstable. Needless to say, it had to be removed & we have invited them back.

So, since we had a really dry summer last year, I'm collecting water in rain barrels to water the garden and conserve our well-water. However, as I discovered recently, rain barrels can be places where mosquitoes can breed. So I put a thin layer of old olive oil (leftover from soap making) on top. I checked on both rain barrels today -- no #mosquitoes!

"Rain Barrels and Mosquito Pests

While using a rain barrel in the garden is great for water conservation among its other benefits, mosquitoes are a constant threat, as they carry life-threatening diseases. Learning how to control mosquitoes in a rain barrel is just as important to controlling them anywhere else, especially since the pests take advantage of standing water to help carry out their life cycle. Here are some things you can do to minimize their presence:

- Dish soap– Liquid dish soap creates a slick film on the surface of the water. When mosquitoes attempt to land, they drown before they have time to lay eggs. Use natural soap and avoid products with perfume or degreasers, especially if you water your plants with rain water. One or two tablespoons of liquid soap per week is plenty for most rain barrels.

- Mosquito dunks– Also known as mosquito donuts, mosquito dunks are round cakes of Bti (Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis), a naturally occurring bacteria that provides mosquito control in rain barrels as it slowly dissolves. However, it is safe for beneficial insects. Be sure the product label indicates the dunks are formulated for ponds because other types, which kill caterpillars, aren’t effective in water. Replace the dunks as needed. Check them after a hard rain.

- Vegetable oil– Oil floats on the surface of the water. If mosquitoes attempt to land, they suffocate in the oil. Use about a quarter cup of oil per week. You can use any type of oil, including olive oil. Horticultural oil or dormant oil are also effective for preventing mosquitoes in rain barrels."
