So somewhat recently I acquired a #Dell #Optiplex 7010 SFF. This one has an #Intel Core i5-3470, 16 GB RAM, and a 480 GB HDD running #Windows 10.

This actually comes from my workplace, and I was lucky enough to keep this machine. My boss once used this as their main computer, but I guess something happened and they've been using a new one since. Thus, right now, I'm going to get data off it and get confirmation we got all the data my boss wants before I completely wipe the thing. Afterwards, I'm going to use it as a server or something and flash #Coreboot on it. (Maybe I'll figure out a way to build my own version of Coreboot with an #edk2 payload). Until then, I've setup a dual boot with Fedora 43 on it in case I need to get any more data off it. Then, I'll put #AlpineLinux on the thing and use it as a server for something.

I'm also taking suggestions on what to do with the thing if anyone has any! :D

It was a great project turning an old optiplex into a media centre. Used gnome and customised the keyboard inputs a little bit to make effective use of this little media keyboard thing I have.

It now plays dvds, cds, steam link, and jellyfin streaming from my home server along with using custom launchers thag open firefox in fullscreen on any streaming service I want ✌️

Very proud of it ngl 😅

Next I need to upgrade the optical drive to bluray!

Heut Morgen nach dem Frühstück die BIOS Batterie erneuert, er quarkte Ende letzter Woche rum beim Hochfahren das sie bereits schwach wäre 🙄.

Hab sie eben auf dem Esstisch gegen eine frische ausgetauscht 😁, nun stellt sich mir die Frage ob ich noch ein BIOS Update mache 🤔. "Problem" dabei ist das es die Rechner Seriennummer bei DELL nicht gibt auf deren Webseite, ich aber für die Modellreihe ein BIOS herunterladen kann. Ist das BIOS in allen OptiPlex 755 gleich 🤷🏻‍♂️.

TBH, I think a #CapacitorPlague #Optiplex #GX270 is only worth it's case and 3,5" FDD as well as ODD tray cover for a #SleeperPC #build, given that it's not too #proprietary and can at least fit a #MicroATX mainboard comfortably...

I’m working on two similar Dell Optiplex machines, six generations apart.

The Dell Optiplex 3010 and the 3070.

Very similar in design and layout. The 3070 has nvne on board and PC4 memory, so certainly some changes.

Speaking of that nvme, the upgrades I did on the 3070 were:

• a migration from a slow 500GB WD Blue hard drive to an nvme 1TB SSD
• Doubled the memory from 8GB to 16GB
• Upgraded the OS from Windows 10 Pro to Windows 11 Pro.

My three year old #Dell #Optiplex #Micro started complaining yesterday that it needed to pin my disk to 100% while I was trying to do something simple thus rendering the machine unusable. "What are you up to Optiplex?" I asked. Ah, trying to install #Windows11 #24H2. Well, let me just shut everything else down and use another machine while you do the dirty. Around fourteen, yes one and four, hours later it began its final reboots. Hmmm, maybe I need a newer desktop?

Can anyone confirm if it's possible to install Debian Linux (not Ubuntu) for Proxmox on a Dell Optiplex 7090 SFF / MT?

I ran into some challenges with a 7070 a few weeks ago, but managed to get it working with a BIOS upgrade. I'd like to know it'll work on a 7090 before I buy one.

Would also love to know if you can use a 4TB m.2 drive AND two 3.5" HDDs at the same time in the MT. Specs suggest it's not supported but 🤷
