🔥✨ Wishes, wonder & a little Forest School magic ✨🔥
Last week, our Forest School fire became something truly special. Each child carefully placed their pinecone into the flames, carrying a wish for the new year. As they burned, the different natural coatings transformed the fire into dancing colours – a beautiful reminder that every child’s hopes and ideas are unique.

🌲❄️ Fresh air doesn’t take a Christmas break ❄️🌲
The Christmas holidays are a wonderful time to slow down, but getting outdoors still plays a vital role in children’s wellbeing. Whether it’s a winter walk, muddy puddle jumping, or a quiet moment noticing nature, time outside supports physical health, emotional regulation, creativity, and calm.

🍂 “There’s magic in the simple moments; watching the leaves fall, feeling the crisp air, and noticing how the world changes around us.”

At KatieB Kids, we love giving children time to connect with nature and experience the rhythm of the seasons. Throwing leaves, exploring textures, and observing colour changes help children build a sense of wonder, grounding, and awareness of the natural world

At KatieB Kids, our garden is a place where imagination takes the lead- and large-scale loose parts open the door to creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking. Whether it’s a fort, a pirate ship, or a dinosaur den, children are empowered to construct, explore, and transform their environment in meaningful ways.

From 2021: Guide to the Growing World of #NatureBasedLearning

“Earth and sky, woods and fields, lakes and rivers, the mountain and the sea, are excellent schoolmasters, and teach of us more than we can ever learn from books.”
John Lubbock

Excerpt: "Inspired by the Scandinavian embrace of #OutdoorLearning, the #ForestSchool movement migrated to the UK in the 1990s and has grown strongly ever since. In the US, the first nature-based preschool, the #NewCanaanNatureCenter, opened in 1967 in #Connecticut. The pace of nature-based preschools was gradual until, many say, after the publication of #RichardLouv’s #LastChildInTheWoods in 2005. Soon after, the growth of these schools went wild, experiencing a 25-fold increase over the past decade.

"Around the world, the forest school movement has also been growing strong. Whether you find forest schools in the UK, #BushKindys in #Australia, #waldkindergarten in #Germany or #MoriNoIe in #Japan, forest schools can be found in dozens of countries as parents and caretakers seek out the benefits of nature for their children, particularly for the early childhood years."

1️⃣4️⃣More Time Outdoors
Our kids know that human connection comes first. For years, if our oldest heard kids playing outside, he knew he could drop whatever he was doing—academic or otherwise—and go join them with full support. Our daughter takes daily “outside-ations” in the backyard, exploring on her own terms. Movement clears the mind. Nature builds resilience. Connection matters.

So, I was pleased to learn that a small local library (in a historic building) is offering "explorer bags" to borrow! And they are right next door to an 80-acre nature preserve! #LibraryOfThings and #LearningWithNature! What a fantastic combination!

There are flowers in front of the building.A teal backpack with LL Bean / Maine Audobon logo. The contents of the backpack are spread on the ground, and includes guidebooks, a magnifying glass, and other items for exploring the outdoors.A walkway over a stream next the a larger river. At KatieB Kids, we believe that gardening fosters a sense of responsibility and connection to nature, as well as developing motor skills and improving self-esteem. Our children take an active role in gardening in our vegetable patches and learn what grows at different times of year.
