#Periodontitis

Men have higher concentrations of interleukin-1 beta in the gingival crevices between tooth and gum than do women, potentially explaining why inflammation leads to higher levels of periodontitis in men.

Jaccard Prize

🏆 Honoured to receive the Jaccard-EFP Research Prize at EuroPerio11 (Vienna, May 2025) for our study on subgingival microbial complexes.

🦠 We propose a new evidence-based view of microbial risk in periodontal health.

🧪 A collaboration between France, Spain and Canada, to appear in the Journal of Clinical Periodontology.

🙏 Grateful to all co-authors and the EFP.

A stunning piece of research:
"what could be one of the most definitive leads yet for a bacterial culprit behind Alzheimer's... comes from a somewhat unexpected quarter: gum disease.

"In a paper led by senior author Jan Potempa, a microbiologist from the University of Louisville, researchers reported the discovery of Porphyromonas gingivalis – the pathogen behind chronic periodontitis (aka gum disease) – in the brains of deceased Alzheimer's patients."

Worth reading, well written & accessible. May not be news to some dentists...

The bacterial species in subgingival plaque can be grouped into 5 major complexes. The red complex (Porphyromonas gingivalis, Treponema denticola, Tannerella forsythia) is closely tied to periodontal disease severity (pocket depth, bleeding). These findings highlight the role of sequential microbial colonization in shaping pathogenic ecosystems.

Entamoeba gingivalis: long forgiven, overlooked, and underestimated? Beware, it's back and it's ready to attack!

Periodontal diseases show a marked increase in prevalence with age, as highlighted by data from Jönköping, Sweden (1983). The progression is irreversible: early diagnosis intervention are essential to protect oral health.

From: Hugoson et al., 1992. doi.org/10.1111/j.1600-051X.19
Dark blue: healthy, orange: gingivitis, grey: periodontitis with mean bone loss <1/3 height, yellow: 1/3-2/3, light blue: >2/3.

Periodontal diseases show high global prevalence, affecting ~90% of young adults (35–44yo): half with gingivitis, half with periodontitis, with no regional specificity.

From: Petersen & Ogawa, 2005. doi.org/10.1902/jop.2005.76.12
