. Images of the studied biofilm from travertine samples at the mesoscale. (a) Green rippled and smooth biofilm in very shallow, fast-flowing channel from Sacred Spring to Great Bath, Bath, within which calcite and ferrihydrite being precipitated. Field of view 40 cm across; (b) Sampling site (arrow) at Bešeňová, top of the travertine cascade to the right. Biofilms with brownish colour. Person for scale 177 cm tall; (c) Green biofilm collected at the distal parts of the Egerszalók travertine mound, below the cascades and approximately 25-30 m away from the thermal well. Falcon tubes in this and other images are 12 cm long; (d) Circular vent orifice and proximal channel of travertine at Asinello with dark green biofilm. Hammer 28 cm long; (e) Proximal channel of the Bullicame travertine system. Channel floor is covered with green biofilm. Tube is 15 cm long; (f) Reddish to brown travertine covered with green biofilm at Karahayıt “Kızılsu (red water)”. Field of view 40 cm across; (g) Proximal channel of Pamukkale travertine. Channel floor is covered with green biofilm. Scale is 10 cm; (h) Distal part of the terraced slope of Terme di Saturnia travertine where travertine pool rims are partly covered with green biofilm. Field of view 2 m across.

#Biofilms study reveals how multiple bacteria species manage to coexist
phys.org/news/2024-10-biofilms

Dispersal of a dominant competitor can drive multispecies coexistence in biofilms cell.com/current-biology/abstr

"One species, #Pseudomonas aeruginosa, dominated over the other 2 #bacteria. But it migrated in search of greener pastures when the surface became too crowded rather than staying behind to compete. By striking out on its own, Pseudomonas allowed the whole colony of bacteria to thrive."

Andrew Jones and Joshua Prince at Duke University developed a model that replicates #PeripherySequestration in #biofilms by accounting for heterogeneity of antibiotic attachment sites and porosity.

In the image we show how the heterogeneous distribution of the different matrix elements and the #bacteria themselves act as barrier against #antibiotics (in red), hindering their effect.

✏ Check out the paper at: pnas.org/doi/full/10.1073/pnas

#SciArt #SciComm

The image represents a biofilm with several matrixes containing bacteria and other generic elements represented by yellow spheres. In the one in the foreground, the different elements of the matrix are clustered, thus blocking the entry of antibiotics (red spheres). In a second matrix a bit more in the background, the elements are distributed homogeneously, allowing easier access to the antibiotics.

A Whiff of #Taxonomy – Altiarchaeum hamiconexum
schaechter.asmblog.org/schaech by @STCmicrobeblog

"within its #biofilm... Individual coccoid cells are rather distant from each other. Yet they are connected by thin cellular appendages... the constant structure and size of these appendages define the distance between cells. The three-dimensional reconstruction of the appendage reveals a remarkable hook structure"

Filamentous Phage Shields schaechter.asmblog.org/schaech @STCmicrobeblog

Phage liquid crystalline droplets form occlusive sheaths that encapsulate and protect infectious rod-shaped #bacteria (2020) pnas.org/doi/full/10.1073/pnas

"in #biofilms and due to the presence of #ExtracellularMatrix #polymers, Pf4 #phage particles form highly ordered yet dynamic #LiquidCrystals (tactoids) that surround the cells. Quite interestingly, these #tactoids confer on the cells an increased tolerance to #antibiotics."

Schematic model of the mechanism of Pf4 phage-mediated antibiotic tolerance.

Searching for life where it shouldn't exist phys.org/news/2023-09-qa-life-

"Jennifer Macalady is a #microbiologist who studies biological interactions between the limited resources that were available on #EarlyEarth: water, atmospheric gases and rocks. Her research takes her to some of the most hostile places for life on Earth, in search of the #microbial #biofilms that can survive there. Her most recent #expedition was to three lakes within Italy's #Frasassi #cave system"
