Took a walk on the waterfront and snapped a few pictures, for as long as I could stand the freezing wind. Went home to edit, and this fraction of a photo caught my eye. This is where my mood took it — make of it what you will.

The Statue of Liberty stands in the distance, seen through a chain link fence topped with coils of barbed wire in the foreground, on a weathered concrete pier rising over dark choppy waters. The perspective is such that the statue appears to be imprisoned behind the fence, a detainee in a concentration camp. The image has been edited to look like a faded and heavily scratched monochrome print with a distressed black border — a bleak document of an atrocity straight out of the history books.

I used to consider myself lucky to live within walking distance of a view of my city’s (and perhaps this country’s) most iconic symbol, but now it’s a bitter sight: a reminder of ideals betrayed, or lies that were never true to begin with. A nation as hollow as the statue itself. There’s still much to love about this place, but it has more to do with good people on the ground, in their unnoticed corners and unremarked lives, bringing joy and creating art and fighting the dark. My faith’s in them. I’m done venerating institutions and national mythologies.

The White House seems to have admitted that it digitally altered an image of a Minnesota protester's arrest so it looks like she was crying. When @Independent asked representatives from the Trump administration about an image of Nekima Levy Armstrong, who was arrested for organizing an anti-ICE protest at a church they were directed to a tweet from Kaelan Dorr, the White House deputy communications director. He shared the altered picture and wrote: “Enforcement of the law will continue. The memes will continue. Thank you for your attention to this matter.”
