#Pi0w

@geerlingguy sadly the #CM5 & #Pi5 suffer #shortages again - at least for the highend (16GB RAM lite & lite W versions)…

Tho it's not like the great Pi shortage where people wanted € 100+ for a #Pi0w and €250+ for a #Pi4-8GB!

@wolf480pl @cas I just assume they don't want to have to deal with a gazillion of undocumented SBCs that may only get 1 person to once push code that gets accepted, but then "orphaned" and break over time as they may not be willing to build & test every new kernel before release just to enshure it ain't broken!

It's absolute chaos and one of the reasons I didn't even try to build @OS1337 for the #Pi0W as of today...

@noodle @decryption @voltagex not only that but some do transparent band-shuffling and client-sorting, thus move them into dedicaded bands according to their capabilities, as to not throttle down the entire wifi just so a #Pi0W can keep up, instead rmdelegating narrowband & embedded devices onto narrowband channels based off their MAC address.

  • So it's all transparent to any client and the AP does the heavy lifting.

Still the original argument is valid: People would be better off buying a cheaper #UniFi setup and having proper cabling installed instead.

@freya @BrodieOnLinux lets just say the idea of @OS1337 is to see what is the minimum viable #Linux distro to get essential work done, and to me that means an #SSH #Terminal.

And I have nothing beyond the #Xbox360.

  • Basically having some nimble "swiss knife" one can use to recover data or get basic stuff setup, because many old systems are a pain in the ass to setup from a clean slate and/or non-original & specifically modified parts.

Even if it's just a sort-of "#Foreman" image that then just dd a base system image or yeets data from a drive...

@ai6yr @admin would would've only been a #Pi0W with the #SDR mod!

Or as a #minimalist #firmware one could chug on a #Pi0 / #Pi0W inside a VT-69 from @violenceworks to turn it into a #SSH-#Terminal...

@xeniac I know that this is the case, but it's not a technical unavoidance despite the #RaspberryPi being a non-#UEFI - #arm device.

  • Even on the old, #32bit boards.

The solution in that regard would be to boot into a #live / #setup mode like with #RaspberryPiOS for #i586-based #PCs and extend it to a setup that allows creating a new custom image with #LUKS - #FDE enabled and properly encrypted.

  • OFC on a #Pi0W that would mean one would've to plug in a 2nd MicroSD with a USB-Adapter but that's not the Point.

I'm not even demanding much, just a simple #TUI / #CLI setup like @ubuntu / #UbuntuServer has with basic customizations.

  • I'm not even expecting it to go so far as to offer including #dropbear - #SSH in the #initramfs so one can boot into the encrypted install and unlock it remotely. Just gimme the blinking cursor at the boot asking me to enter the password for the encrypted partition...

That being said @w84death 's #Floppinux v0.2.1 just booted through fine, so yeah, perfectly feasible as "low end testbed" unless I get like a #VIA #C3 / #C5 / #C7 or one of those expensive #Vortex86-made #486SX clones that @rasteri used for the #WeeCee, tho I'm shure noone would go below a #RaspberryPi #Pi0 / #Pi0W v1.3 or the original #PiModelB v1.2 in terms of #FrugalComputing.

@LambdaCalculus
As long as "cheap chinese clones" only try to bamboozle with specs and not get their documentation and drivers onto an acceptable standard (and the #Pi5B sets the bottom line here!), noone wants to buy those.

  • I literally have a #BananaPiZeroM2 that I bought during the great #PiShortage but I never bothered to use it anywhere because it's more hassle than to antenna mod a #Pi0W or #Pi0W2 and call it a day because it doesn't require me to download some janky custom image to get even a regular 80x25 #Linux CLI up and running.

@imabuddha @mdhughes to me it seems odd to make a quirky handheld like the #PlayDate to begin with.

At a price point of $199 + taxes, customs and shipping, this thing is $20 below the #AnaloguePocket and since #PricesSetExpectations, it feels like a bad value proposition.

Want to play some nice games on the go?

Want to do some #LowSpec #GameDevelopment?

Want some #RetroGaming on the go?

  • Consider one of those cheap GBA clones that just run ROMs off a MicroSD!

Want to make some games that look good on a #monochrome #eInk?

Want to build some quirky #controller?

It just feels like one of these Raspberry Pi Zero Clones that come with neither good documentation nor software support, and I wounder how they even got enough backers to make it.

Personally, I think for the specs and the type of games possible on that screen, even $99 would be a hard sale...

  • $49 would've been an option if this had like a vibrant ecosystem like the #GameBoy...
  • But hey maybe I'm critical of it because I never had played with one nor know anyone in person who owns one... Others seem to like it tho

@neil I'd consider looking at professional refurbishers.

I do know some sources that sell some older ThinkPads in that range - usually destined for export into the global south due to not being refurbishable with like WinShit10-11...

With postage will be a stretch tho.

If it doesn't have to be a notebook, I'd point at some refurbished thin clients / small form factor desktops which can be had for that money if not way lower with room for upgrades.

I mean, you could theoretically just get some generic keyboard case for a tablet, a #Pi0W, a tiny touchscreen, a bluetooth mouse and a powerbank for all that and still be under £50, but I guess janky DIY doesn't count either.

For like £100-£150 I could easily find something with postage from a reputable refurbisher, so not some one-off clearance listing...

Personally I'd make it a price vs. performance battle and open it up to everything <10 kg total including keyboard, pointing device, screen and power supply...

Because I can find Thin Clients for as little as €20 and Screens for as little as €19 and the peripherals new (i.e. Logitech MK120) can be had for as little as €15...

Not an awesome machine but it'll run #BunsenLabs #Linux and #Minecraft off a USB flashdrive... ^

@contrefeu @wdormann @Raspberry_Pi

I think a lot of those cheap #RaspberryPi "clones" are just lazy attempts to just throw some #SBC together and oit the door withoit putting in any #effort...

For example, the #BananaPiZeroM2 should run circles around the #Pi0W as it even comes with the best mod ever right out of the box.

Instead, they feel like a chinese knockoff with basically nonexistant documentation...

Compared to that anyone could propably port @OS1337 to the original #Pi1B v1.2 within a week if they wanted to, as it's relatively standard #32bit #ARMv5r11 with all the published documentation...

@fuchsiii @foone yes, there are ways to just turn a @Raspberry_Pi / #Pi0 / #Pi0W into either a #Floppy or #ODD emulator.
AFAICT, @ActionRetro does that all the time on #vintag #Macs...

Personally, I'd just bite the bullet, buy a Gotek 1M44 Floppy emulator, mod it with #FlashFloppy and get that done.

@linear so basically you're adding yourself a #Pi0W like a #VT69 to it?

Nifty...

Consider a #LiFePO4 battery for extended lifetime espechally with low discharge depths...

Kevin Karhan :verified:kkarhan@infosec.space
2024-04-07

@lzg espechally since the #OLPC's - like @mozilla 's #FirefoxOS phones - never got sold to people that wanted to buy one to tinker with AND in somencases they got confiscated by governments and they ain't that repairable...

For the same price today, something like a cheap bike + repairable LiFePO4 battery pack + lights + a @Raspberry_Pi #Pi0W with keyboard, screen, microSD and adaptors would be more than possible...

Offering both mobility and accessibly priced tech...

Kevin Karhan :verified:kkarhan@infosec.space

@mntmn nifty...

I've done harder #Ghettohacking tho...

Like unsarcastically #Ghettohack the way @landley would say this should be the minimum viable #Linux [or rather #Android] #Developer #Workstation...

With a @Raspberry_Pi #Pi0W and a tablet keyboard sleeve...

A Raspberry Pi Zero W with a USB-OTG Keyboard, a HDMI adaptor and cable as well as USB Power Supply being used as a desktop PC.The same Raspberry Pi Zero W running Raspberri PiOS minimal and booting to a CLI login on a big LCD screen.
2024-01-22

@DavittoKun @landley Heck if I really were to force myself I could propably be fine with a tiny box (#Nettop or #Netbook) that just gets me somehow online similar to the #VT69 with a #Pi0W:
