This is a #grass‽ From giant bamboos to maize and the common lawn ryegrass, #Poaceae can be quite variable. #Panicum cupressifolium from #Madagascar has minute leaves, making it look like a #cypress (hence the name).

Phylogenetic reconstruction and timetree of the Poaceae and close relatives (Joinvillea, Ecdeioclea, and Flagellaria) based on chloroplast DNA sequence from 700 samples. The branches are color-coded by subfamily and collapsed at the subtribal level. Nodes with posterior probabilities below 0.99 are marked with a white node symbol and the posterior probability is shown. Node bars represent the 95% highest posterior density of node age estimates.

A phylogenetic classification of the Poaceae, includes 12 subfamilies, 53 tribes, and 90 subtribes evolving clockwise from Joinvillea and Ecdeiocolea (outgroups). BOP = Bambusoideae, Oryzoideae, and Pooideae; PACMAD = Panicoideae, Aristidoideae, Chloridoideae, Micrairoideae, Arundinoideae, and Danthonioideae. Thick branches represent subfamily splits; medium thick branches represent tribe splits; and thin branches represent subfamily splits.

Phylogenomic profiles of whole-genome duplications in #Poaceae and landscape of differential duplicate retention and losses nature.com/articles/s41467-024

#Grasses cover about 40% of the Earth's land surface, thriving in a multitude of environments. The evolutionary success of this plant family, which includes rice, maize, wheat and bamboo, likely results from a history of whole-#genome duplications.

You ever just look at grass flowers? They're so understated, yet surprisingly beautiful. Truly the unsung heroes of the flowering plants.

They're extremely delicate. They come in every color and shade, in every shape and arrangement. Their fragile stigmas and anthers hang in the open air, exposed and vulnerable, relying on the random fates of the wind to ensure the continued survival of their lineages.

Grass grows to be as small as a kitten, or as large as a dragon. Their seeds sustain more people than any other plant in the world. Grasses are so prominent where they grow that entire sections of the Planet Earth are named after them: Grasslands.

The lands of the grass.

Many of us humans think ourselves to be the ones with domain over this world, yet our existence is owed to the grasses, and even we acknowledge the essential fact that the land belongs to the grass. And the grass? It belongs to no one.

Thanks! I'm in NYC, so those can work for me.

I've had Lauren Brown's "Grasses" a long time. She has a newer book out I should get.

Has it ever occurred to you that #grass hasn't always existed?!

Grass is an ubiquitous family of plants called #Poaceae and it hasn't been around forever...

I was today's years old when I learnt that we have no evidence of grass before ~65 million years ago. That evidence comes in the form of silica residues in fossilised #dinosaur droppings!
