For late #Mohntag (CET) and early #TrainTrackTuesday (PT), here's a #remembrancePoppy on a #DLR #train (#DocklandsLightRailway, a driverless metro in #London I used to ride every day, though I only got off at #TowerGateway station when Bank was closed for some reason, so actually quite rarly 🤔)

As it's #RememberanceDay in the Commonwealth states on November 11, I thought it fitting.

A red Docklands Light Railway (DLR) train, adorned with a remembrance poppy on the front, approaches Tower Gateway station on an elevated track. The train, marked with the number 58, is positioned on the right side of the image, moving towards the platform. The platform is sheltered, with a sign displaying ‘Tower Gateway.’ The urban background includes buildings and a cloudy sky, while the platform is equipped with safety railings and a tactile yellow line for passenger guidance.

80 years ago today the 26th Infantry Regiment of the US Army was on their 158th day of almost continuous action since June 6, 1944. They were in the Hürtgen Forest and by early December they would be given one month of rest in December in Aubel, Belgium but that only lasted a week because the fighting in the Ardennes would begin.

That's what my dad was up to. There is a lot to remember from the past as it plays out again today.

_The Evening Post_, 29 Apr 1924:
LOCAL AND GENERAL

No poppies were sold in #Auckland on “Poppy Day” owing to the disagreement between the Auckland Returned Soldiers’ Association and the New Zealand Returned Soldiers’ Association, but instead of the artificial blooms customarily sold on Poppy Day, members of the local organisation and their supporters disposed of badges bearing the emblem of the poppy. The headquarters of the association recently decided to alter the method of allocating the receipts from the sale of flowers, and suggested that the branches should agree to a substantial portion of the proceeds being devoted to the needs of the association. The Auckland association, however, declined to fall in with this suggestion…

_The Evening Post_, 15 Mar 1924:
              POPPY DAY, 1924
     PROPOSED ALLOCATION
                OF FUNDS
  STATEMENT BY N.Z.R.S.A
The following statement, issued by the New Zealand Returned Soldiers’ Association, makes clear the intentions of the association in regard to the allocation of 1924 Poppy Day funds, arid again sets out in general outline the objects of Poppy Day, a day of remembrance of Flanders fields.
Poppy Day, the day which reminds us of the battlefields and crosses in Flanders and the other theatres of the Great War, falls usually, in New Zealand, on Anzac Day, or the day preceding. This year, Easter occurs near this date, and the different local returned soldiers’ associations throughout New Zealand will make their own arrangements for the sale of the poppies on such day nearest Anzac Day as is found most suitable for them.
The poppies come direct from the French Children’s League, and the proceeds of the sale of these poppies from the league to the N.Z.R.S.A. are devoted to the succour of the French war orphans and the children of the devastated regions in France.…

REMEMBRANCE DAY TODAY

(also known as Poppy Day owing to the tradition of wearing a remembrance poppy) is a memorial day observed since the end of the First World War in 1919 to honour armed forces members who have died in the line of duty.

The day is also marked by war remembrances in several other non-Commonwealth countries.

In most countries, Remembrance Day is observed on 11 November to recall the end of First World War hostilities.
