I believe this picture is of a rusty patched bumble bee (bombus affinus). Other family members have documented these in our garden. The photo isn’t great but it’s the best I could get and I wanted to share that regular yards with native plants can provide habitat for endangered species. Very small, mauve flower with 5 pointy petals in a tulip-like form.

Yesterday became native plant day: First, my order of plugs from "Wild About Flowers" out in Okotoks, AB arrived - including giant hyssop, prairie sagewort, larkspur, dotted blazing star, blue beard tongue, spike goldenrod and marsh violet.

Then I drove to a small aquatic plant nursery near Grandora, SK to get my arrowheads and Alaskan Iris.
