#qtile #debian and my own #tui launcher drydock with pseudographix, easily customizable commands list. Any of 45 commands/apps to launch with 2 keys only!
#freesoftwareadvent day 6
Okay, I'll have to mention #hyprland in this list, since I finally adopted it this year. Previously I ran #qtile. Functionally they're similar in that they are both tiling window managers.
Qtile has a python config file, allowing to define complex combos.
Hyprland has a more limited config syntax, but a powerful hyprctl cli tool, allowing for similarly complex combos to happen via shell commands.
And hyprland is pretty with nice animations.

🌘 Qtile 視窗管理員:Python 驅動的平鋪體驗
➤ 從 XFCE 到 Qtile 的 Python 平鋪式視窗管理器深度配置指南
✤ https://tech.stonecharioteer.com/posts/2025/qtile-window-manager/

The Qtile Window Manager: A Python-Powered Tiling Experience

Finally got most of a workflow down for customizing my #Qtile instance on #CachyOS
I use hellwal to generate a python colors config which gets passed to a customization folder Qtile imports from. This flips the wallpaper, colors, and window highlighting. It also adjust my terminal colors.
I just need to finish it out to make a better rofi config and I think i'll be set for awhile.
The world works in mysterious ways. One time I'm in a really deep rut, then without me realizing it, I'm suddenly out of it, only to fall into another one. It's a really up-and-down cycle, and I don't know if I'd be happy about it.
So I had been DM-hopping for weeks just because I was looking for a tiling window manager that doesn't require an arm and a leg to set up -- #hyprland, #niri, #qtile, #sway -- I tried #cosmic desktop and kept it on tiling mode too. Each one took too long to set up!
@bearington @mms I've started tiling wm life with #Awesome, then switched to #dwm but I wanted to tweak more and didn't like patching issues. Maybe less of C++ skills. So, since 2015 switched to #qtile :qtile:
ok, dieses #qtile ist wirklich ganz nett. Fühlt sich wie mein altes xmonad an, nur halt mit python drunter und Wayland. :D
OK, da denkt man sich: Alle populären #tiling Windowmanager für #Wayland haben das eine oder das andere Problem. Viele sind unmaintained, Sway hat dieses manuelle tiling von i3, Hyprland hat einen Hauptentwickler... Ich will doch nur ein #xmonad für Wayland...
Also selbst schreiben?
Basically, I've used my custom bezier curves for hyprland because why not.
One thing I didn't manage : bind a command for cliphist and grim/slurp. The workaround is easy but it's just something possible with different WMs.
One thing i wish for : the setting new_is_master could be divide for each layout (tile, spiral, dwindle). A little bit like #qtile
Thinking of redoing my setup on my PC. Now the question is do I #distrohop and try out a new distro all together or do I start with #ricing #qtile because that’s something I’ve been wanting to do for awhile.
Okay, I admit, I gave up on #QTile and went back to #Fluxbox.
I promise, it is me, not qtile. My work flow just doesn't benefit from tiling, and I spent too much time trying to get it to act like Fluxbox. It isn't Fluxbox.
On the plus side, I learned a bit more python playing around with QTile and now know about rofi - a nice replacement for dmenu_run (which I had been using since forever, I think).

Still loving the 3440x1440 monitor, though. On #Gentoo #Linux, ofc.
got the 3440x1440 monitor set up yesterday. unwisely switched to it at the same time I switched from #Fluxbox to #QTile. Feeling the change stress.
But, got #Conky working; am getting used to the different layouts, and am enjoying the extra real estate. Need to tweak the fonts and some settings a bit, but feeling more okay with it than I was last night.
That said, anyone know how to set the N E S W margins individually? Tried a few ways; all errored out. Top conky = need bigger margin there.
Until #Gentoo portage catches up with the packages needed for #StumpWM to run without crashing, I think I'll give #QTile a go. Can't do the keyboard shortcut things I want, but neither can most other WM or DEs.
Should be very helpful with the new 3440x1440 monitor arriving tomorrow. Large fonts AND two windows next to each other. Sounds great; I can't wait to experience it. (Upgrading from 1920x1080.)
Do you have any experience with or opinion about the #Hyperland compositor? I would like to hear about it, as it sounds awesome on paper and looks great on screenshots. I'm planning to change to a tiling window manager and wonder how it compares to other alternatives. I have tried #Qtile before and liked it. I was also interested in #xmonad, because it can be configured with #Haskell, but I'll rather focus on #Wayland options and I think there are no ports in the horizon.
Wow... what a simple life with #lagrange . I created RFC for #geminiprotocol notifications standard and wanted to implement it into my #qtile as bar widget to show BBS notifications count - BOOM - you can just download page source with lagrange with identities for later parsing. I'm excited
