This is a 16x9 landscape image taken from the south coast on the west side of Vancouver Island, BC. The main subject is a spectacularly twisted western red cedar tree, bent and battered from years and years of wind and storms. Other bend trees stand sentinel, and the water, hidden in fog, sits in the background.

Took me a little while to get back to this, but this is my favourite nurse log image. From 2013, made from 11 images with an old 10MP point and shoot camera at Cathedral Grove.

This is a very wide panorama of an old red cedar log, stretching out over the water from the shore of Cameron Lake. The log is absolutely covered with ferns, salal and other plants, providing ample proof of the term nurse log.

This ancient Red Cedar has survived west coast storms and, over time, human interference. Broad based, this thick trunked beauty was allowed to remain in amongst well groomed campsites. She's gnarly and is wrapped around her base with vines. There's a 5ft high opening at the base ... large enough for children to enter ... into the world of their imagination!

An enormous #OldGrowth #cedar #tree has been identified in #VancouverIsland ’s #ClayoquotSound possibly dating back over a millennium. The western #RedCedar reaches a towering height of 46 metres and stands five metres wide at its base.

It is currently the sixth largest redcedar in #Canada - according to the #BCBigTreeRegistry 🌲

They're called redcedar, because their interior wood is red, but their bark is rough and gets greyer as they age. Add to that the green and blue lichen that coat their bark over time, and the effect gives a feeling of enchantment to the coastal woods. Sometimes I think they look like Ents.
