I did a pro bono #SpEd consult and am left with a bit of a #moral dilemma, so tell me #edutooters, what would you do. 7yo girl attends a middle class #PublicSchool. A 1st grade boy repeatedly enters the girl's bathroom and taunts the girl's as he looks at them under the doors. After the girl's privacy had been violated a number of times over weeks, she finally kicked the boy in the face the last time, as he was peering at her. @autisticengineer I was also late diagnosed. I always knew something was different. I labeled it #introversion. But there were no #resources or #support. Honestly, #SPED in those days would have been harmful for me. What I needed was emotional and social support. I did fine educationally, by good fortune.
The benefit knowing sooner would have been feeling less like a freak and winding up #SelfIsolating and #masking, on top of being in the #closet. So much #clarity now.
Had a shitty meeting with my child’s school #slp #sped director, and teacher about #neurodiverse affirming care, and why their constant questioning during remote sessions to try to force AAC usage is BS. Can I just say FUCK #iep meetings and #sped departments! Seriously the amount of shit you have to fucking wade through to get your #disabled child basic supports is BS! I have a HUGE amount of #Privelege as a white, cis, able bodied appearing queer womxn in a heteronormative relationship. I can only imagine how horrible Black and Brown folx with disabilities are treated in these institutionalized meetings. I was literally having a #panicattack due to the stress. Just provide the DAMN services!
Buried in this article abt the 6yo #Virginia boy who shot his #teacher is this telling statement about the child's #SpEd "care plan". Clearly the school failed to provide #FAPE if they were requiring the parents to chaperone their child throughout the day. I'm not a fan of more restrictive environments for young #students, but if a #school doesn't have the resources to ensure a safe environment for all kids under their care, then a change should have been made. #edutooter
