Big news from @thebeeguy !
"Join us in saving our native wild bees from extinction
"We are the people behind The Bee Sanctuary of Ireland, the first and only true Native Wild Bee sanctuary on the planet. A not-for-profit social enterprise, the only Certified Vegan Organic land in Ireland. Now, with your help, coming to a location near you!"
In case you didn’t know, honeybees are native to Europe. We brought them here. They aren’t “bad,” but they also shouldn’t be our primary concern. We have hundreds of native bee species here in the U.S. and many are tiny or solitary some are BETTER POLLINATORS than European honeybees. Native bees are just way harder to farm and control. #bees #savethepollinators #nativebees

If you zoom in, you can see one of the several bees that were enjoying lunch (right before it started pouring down)
So happy we planted the lavender that "would never survive there".

My first bee!! (That I’ve witnessed)
It’s hugely satisfying to finally see pollinators using this little pit stop I planted over 2 months ago! 🐝
This hill was overtaken by blackberry brambles when we bought the place. Part of reclaiming it for our fruit orchard is seed bombs of nitrogen-fixing legumes. Bonus: the #bees love it. #savethepollinators
Really, guys? We host you on a 4 acre plot, half of which is forested, and you put your babies here?

Omg babies! We’re hosting a box of newly emerging #nativebees on our property and they are so adorable. #bees #savethepollinators #bainbridgeisland
Down a rabbit hole base on a link provided by @alexwild, I found this paper. This is wild (pun intended). "Urban gardens promote bee foraging over natural habitats and plantations"
I've been volunteering with a local nonprofit working to preserve the wild spaces in our semi-rural community. They work very hard to bar human activity on their lands. It's pretty interesting to see examples where human activity promotes conservation better than nature.
Yes domesticated #bees consume similar resources as #nativebees, but this is weird framing. Our pesticide-soaked concrete-covered urban landscape with cut grass patches only big enough to accommodate pet waste is a bigger threat than competition from European #HoneyBees. If nothing else, bee husbandry encourages education and active management of resources, over apathy & ignorance. #savethepollinators

#CrocusLawn update: Things are looking pretty good! Our front lawn is speckled in hundreds of these tiny, vibrant yellow and purple flowers. While they aren’t native, the #NativePollinators sure enjoy them.
Note the chicken wire… I put it down once I caught the squirrels digging up the freshly planted corms. They aren’t even supposed to like crocus! 😐
After two failed seasons, I decided it was time to stop wasting money and get serious. This Beginner #Beekeeper Course was an intense 10 hours, but I filled a notebook with all of the things I was doing wrong.
